Etiquette when detecting

Mosley

New member
Today I went to a local beach. It's not large, maybe 15 yards from the sidewalk to the water, and maybe 30 yards long. There was another person metal detecting so I left and went to another part of the park. What's the proper thing to do when another person is detecting in an area you planned to hunt?

I think if you stay away as much as possible
that would be fine .. then again what do I know??
Im the type of person that would say Hi and ask how He/She
is doing so far ... I met a new :detecting: buddy that way
last year ..

Im sure the more experinced will adivse you a lot better than
me ...and Ill learn as well

It depends on how I feel that day. I usually go up and say hi and then decide if I'm going to stay or go. I generally go someplace else, though. When I've been approached in the past, I always say don't let me stop you from having fun. Somethines they stay sometimes they go. FWIW, if it was a small area as you indicated I would have left as soon as I saw the other guy.

:usaflag:That is when you walk up and show him a phony badge and tell him he's not supposed to be there......just kidding.

That was a good one Dave.:clapping: I am sure that will happen to me one day. I think I will probably just go somewhere else.

The proper etiquette would be to walk right up to the other detectorist, turn around and cut loose with your loudest, stinkiest rip you can. Then wish him a happy hunt and move on.

I usually introduce myself, exchange a few pleasantries, and then move on.

Some of the time, we compare a find, to see who guessed correctly when it's dug up. Winner take all. This has happened to me enough times now, I'm beginning to think detectorists like competition!

I would say howdy and move on. Of course, after he left and I was still on the beach, I would definetly check and see if he missed something.

Unless it's a big area where you won't be falling over each other it's "first come first serve." Exchange pleasantries and move on.
