Many people worry about setting a machine up the way they want it but don
 
Im not a huge fan of a 8 or 9 Ft swing either when dirt hunting because most people arent paying attention to their swing and lift their coil at the end of their swing loosing depth anyway and many times causing falsing. On the other side....some machines are very sensitive. Shoe eyelets, scoops, knives, pinpointers and equipment you wear will make the machine react if you dont have it far enought away from you. On a not so trashy beach..... then yes i lengthen my shaft if i choose to cover a little more beach looking for larger targets. Surprisingly for those unbalanced shafts a simple movement of the grips can make a huge difference. If you get an after market rod this is even more important to know.
