Ergonomics of the MX-Sport

JASONSPAZ1

New member
I have been all over the forums of different brands firing off questions left and right. It is just that I am in the throws of new detector choosing insanity.
I think I am driving my wife nuts as well.
Anyway the MX Sport is in the final running and I wanted to ask about the ergonomics of the MX Sport.
I have had a majority of the White's aluminum box machines since the original Spectrum series. So I know what to expect from a White's machine and I felt that White's machines had a good balance of weight distribution on their machines.
However, the MX-Sport looks like an Aussie machine and I am not a fan of those machine ergonomics.
I am no candy wimp hedge trimmer as I have swung a Sovereign GT with all the accessories and dongles attached and boy and that was a tank setup, but I manage no problem.
I just am tired of lugging my machine with all kinds of dongles and what not's and I am tired of planned detecting days getting called off due to rain.
So I hear two sides of the opinion.
Some people think White's balanced the MX sport out correctly ( my feelings ) even though I never held one.
Do you subscribe to the feeling that the MX sport is uncomfortable to swing in or out of water.
I know I need the seven inch coil for the lakes as " let me guess" the stock coil floats.

Thanks in advance everyone for your patience.

Jason, the stock 10" coil does not float, it sinks!

As for ergo, I would say that with the 7" the balance is perfect. With the stock 10" coil at full extension it is a tad nose-heavy but about on par with the rest of our machines. Not as tippy as a "Deuce" or an AT Pro though. The MX Sport is more comfortable for me to swing than a V3i, and has a satisfying feel to it. I think the grip has a lot to do with that.

FWIW I work at White's - but I won't BS you, honesty comes first.

The coil sinks and that is a pleasant surprise.
Good job on that.
I've swung a v3i and I do like the balance of the V. This is just what I wanted to hear.
Thanks a bunch.

If it's ergonomics you're worried about, try swinging the old horseshoe handle Nautilus detector all day! You'll be happy swinging the Sport after using that one for many years. I know I am!

Right on the money!

Can't speak for ergonomics of the sport for water hunting,,,dry land the stock coil along with detector don't feel good to me.
MX Sport is a beefy unit,,,strong it seems,,,but it comes with weight,,and yes a bit nose heavy with stock coil.

Yes I've had V3i,,, from an ergo standpoint I would use the Sport.

But here we are comparing to a detector(v3i) that is way out of balance with 10 dd coil.

Most times when you compare to bad,,,you get a " better" rating.

The stock coil sinks but the seven is better better ergonomically. Honestly, I use a detector buddy harness on a 2 pound machine! I just love the way the detector swings out of the way and back into my hand when I dig a target then stand up.

Jason,

You coming from a GT Sovereign with all the extra attachments, and using the big box White's I think you'll be ok with the MX Sport weight. It's not light by any means, but I do ok with it and I feel so will you. Think David mentioned it's beefie/solid, has some weight to it and that it is with the 10" DD coil, it feels and swing's like my 5900 DI Pro SL with the 9.5" coil. With the elliptical or small Detect 7" coil it's even better balanced, but I'm preferring the 10" simply because of ground coverage and depth especially with prospecting mode.

Also want to add, although I like and use the MX Sport for certain hunting conditions I do use other top end VLF. Each have an edge over the other and I do enjoy using all of them and won't hesitate to switch to another when conditions change.

Guess we are spoiled, in the old days ergonomics somehow got kicked to the curb. No armrest, just a handle and in most cases with the wrong angle attached to big metal box. I still use the older detectors of yesterday, for both fun and pushing the envelope with these old BFO or TR seeing if I can get a few targets before my arm falls off.

Here is an old early White's from the early sixties, still operates and uses one 67.5 volt and two 1 1/2 volt batteries. The 67.5 battery setup is modified with seven 9-volt batteries wired in Series inside a replica 67.5 volt sleeve, looks like one of the original batteries once the seven 9-volt batteries are inside the sleeve. And I'll be using this old vintage tank this weekend at an old site, along with the MX Sport with prospecting mode.

Good luck with your decision, plenty of good detectors out there I'm sure you'll make the right choice.

Weight seems fine to me. Of course I don't have noodle arms

nose heavy , limited coils

Tboykin has it right. About perfect with the 7" coil. Nose heavy with stock. Great machine. Underrated and overlooked because of poor start. I don't use mine in the water, so can't tell you about that but works very well on land. Very good separation. Very good depth. Very good target id. I highly recommend.
