Eratic signals

that wont pinpoint with the T2......I dig but there's nothing there... Normal?.... Do you guys and girls dig targets that that are eratic from every direction?

I've found that some erratic signals on my machine are junk that pinpoints off to the side of the coil so that when I dig where the coil pinpointed nothing is there. As someone else said in the forums before... if you lift the coil a bit more off the ground and try it.. you will probably get a more centered pp. Nails will almost always pp off center for me. When you dig and nothing is there.. try digging into the sides of the hole and checking with a hand held pinpointer. Of course I have also had deep signals that were erratic and when I dig they disappear. Usually by digging deeper I find the target. I think disturbing the ground breaks a halo of some sort and makes the signal weaker. Just experiment a bit :)

It will often occur if any one, or more, of the following exist:

Using a very low Discriminate level.

Ground Balance setting that is a little 'off' from proper.

Ground mineral problems, such as a 'hot rock' or other intense mineral body that is out of sync with the GB setting used.

Possible EMI issues.

A desirable target at an odd angle.

A desirable target mixed in plowed or dug ground that has a mix of rocks and or dirt clods, etc.

Very small, difficult to isolate objects.

Those were just a few possible reasons for an errant response.

I can't think of a detector I have ever owned that didn't, at some time, produce 'erratic signals.' It is something we all can just deal with. If I get a good solid signal, and it has a tight VDI and it registers pretty close to a US 25

I have noticed that with the double d coil on the Teknetics T2, there is a wider pinpointing area. ( Unlike the smaller coils.) The targets dont always be where they seem to be. I usually have to dig bigger holes to find them.

The center of the 11" DD coil is a small circle just forward of where the stem attaches to the coil. Looks like a little circular plastic injection molding mark. As previously posted, raise the coil a 3" inches from the ground, do the standard X'ing of the target to get a rough center. Once centered that way, start using the pinpoint mode, remembering that the little circle is the coils center. Maintain the coil 3" above ground when pinpointing.
Why 3"..............because this 11" DD coil will mis-center objects within 3" of the coils bottom. This is due to the inherent design of DD coils, not a flaw with your unit.
I was out practicing in the park today doing it this way. Nailed the coins right on the money every time using this technique.
