Equinox headphone thread

Ok Folks, I got my 800 on Monday and have done a little testing. I haven't Hunted a official hunt yet but I have played in the yard as well as put a little time in the test garden.

My Initial thoughts on the Headphones are that they sound great and have zero static:icon_thumright: But I am a feller with decent sized ears and these headphones are small as far as the ear cup. I have a feeling these will be making hot spots on my ears on a full days hunt. They more or less your ear fits inside the cup vs fitting over or surrounding the ear like most. They fit snugly for me that's for sure. I have a feeling I will not be the only one who thinks they are just too small.

Looking at the technology of the Equinox it looks like we may have Good options in terms of connectivity. Has anyone heard yet if any Bluetooth aptX low latency head phones will work?

If you have heard of any that may work post up here, Now or in the future. My goal is to try a couple different sets out and see if anything else will work.

Here are a few pictures comparing the new Equinox headphones compared to the Deteknix Deus headphones. I love the Deteknix as they don't squeeze my head and are very free around the ear.

Thanks for this thread
I too am interested in alternatives....Particularly sports ear buds - the type that wrap around ear as these do not fall out no matter what you do.

Will Apt-X earbuds work ok without lag ?
or
Do they have to be Apt-X Low Latency earbuds ? (expensive and hard to find)

I am pretty sure you want the low latency either way from a detecting standpoint. Hopefully we can figure out what works here soon. I may do a amazon order of a couple different ones and send back what I don't prefer. We do have the WM08 too though.

Terra --

Non-low-latency ones will apparently WORK, but technically there should be more "lag." WILL that lag be perceptible at ALL? No idea.

Just to add to what Jackalope said, I used the headphones last night for a couple of hours. They sounded real good, no lag that I could notice, no static at all, and for me, they fit well. My ears are not particularly large, so for me, they were quite comfortable. I do have a head on the "large" side (7 1/4 to 7 3/8 hat size, if I recally), but the adjustment of the "head band part" -- to make them adjust to larger or smaller heads, was plenty in my case, to make them fit well...

I want to try my Bose Bluetooth when my machine comes. nice part is noise cancellation which should be great at the beach

I have tried my Bose QuietComfort 35 with the CTX and wireless module. Obviously they sounded great I was wired so there was no delay. I tried using them while detecting the woods in the fall. The noise cancellation didn't do as well as I thought it would with the sounds of the crunching leaves. Probably just too much of a variety of sounds to compensate for. I use my headphones all day, every day at work since I am in a server room. The noise cancellation in that kind of environment is phenomenal with the Bose headphone. I imagine the ocean waves would have a steadier sound which the noise cancellation may work great with.

I tried various bluetooth headsets with my Equinox and they all worked great. Latency, however, is the big issue. There are several major bluetooth "codecs", or modes, that are in use with various devices. Both the transmitter and the headphones have to be capable of the same "codec." For us, this means aptx low latency codec is what you want. The Equinox supports this and spo any headphones that also support aptx low latency should work fine and should give you about 40 ms (milliseconds) of latency. Regular non-low latency aptx is another codec in widespread use, and it's about 100 ms of latency. Regular non-aptx headphones, usually called SBC or "standard bluetooth," will work, but then you end up with latency of 200-400 ms, fine for listening to music, or even making a phone call, but unacceptably long for detecting.

All the various bluetooth headsets I tried (or rather borrowed from my teenaged kids ;)), linked up very easily and worked great, except that they were regular bluetooth and had high latency. After doing some reasearch, I ordered a set of low latency headphones off of Amazon and those should be here tomorrow. They are "Avantree 40 hr Wireless Bluetooth 4.1 Over-the-Ear Foldable Headphones / Headset with Mic, APTX LOW LATENCY Fast Audio." Have not tried them yet, but on paper they look to be about ideal and have lots of good reviews. I'll check back after I've had a chance to try them out.

And for wired headphone use, here's another handy little item to order, a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter pigtail, so you can use regular headphones with the Equinox. Even with Bluetooth, I'm going to throw in my regular wired headphones as a backup before I head out to the field.

Hosa MHE-100.5 1/4 inch TRS to Right-Angle 3.5 mm TRS Headphone Adaptor Cable, 6 inch (sorry, I don't think I can put the actual link in the post, but you can easily search for the item)

The right angle plug takes a lot of the strain off the plug on the detector end.

i just checked a pair I bought while waiting for the Impact fiasco to resolve itself. they are Bluedio Turbine T4. They seem to work in acceptable spec while air testing the 800. Cant get in the ground so I don't know if ground is accurate with air tests. $35 on Amazon

Received the new Avantree Audition Pro low latency headphones yesterday morning and spent the afternoon trying them out with the new Equinox. They worked great! There is just no substitute for wireless headphones, once you try them you don't ever want to go back. The Audition Pro's use the aptx low latency codec which supposedly gives only 40ms of lag, which to my ear, is not perceptible at all. Any bluetooth headphones that use aptx low latency should work just as well. It's really great that Minelab included the ability to pair with any number of widely available third party headphones. Pairing, by the way, was done easily with one push of the button on the Equinox and took only a few seconds.

Here's the sports field I search yesterday. Trash every few inches, gum wrappers and all sorts of assorted mostly aluminum trash, but the Equinox sniffed out all the good stuff.

OK, the 1/8" to 1/4" adapter cable does NOT work. I received it today and discovered that when plugged in, it does not turn off the detector external speaker, similar to the CTX. This is weird, since the stereo walkman headphones I tried work perfectly, and the 1/8" plug on my old walkman headphones and the 1/8" plug on the adapter cable are identical. I can get the new adapter cable to work just fine when I also use a stereo-to-mono adapter plugged into the Equinox headphone jack. So I've got to do some more research here and see what's up. Of course this is only if you want to use wired headphones. No issues with the Bluetooth headphones.

I guess the adapter cable would work, though, on the WM08, so there is that...but otherwise, sounds like one would need 1/8" male mono to 1/4" female stereo adapter (or adapter cable, either way). Just like on the CTX...

VERY strange that your 1/8" headphones with the stereo connector worked, but the adapter didn't...

Steve

I haven't tried it on the WM08, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work. The WM08 is supposed to work with all regular wired headphones. My main goal is to try to get a wired setup to use my Jolly Rogers (which have the "Minelab" toggle switch and work on the CTX I had) as a backup in case the wireless headphones go south or run out of juice at an inopportune time.

The adapter cable does work fine as long as I use the stereo to mono adapter. Actually, it's not a bad solution. I was worried about the extra length causing too much strain on the detector headphone jack, but the adapter actually sits very nicely within the raised metal ring around the jack taking much off the horizontal strain off.

I just ordered a couple of these adapter cables. Link to adapter cable. Although they don't have the right angled plug, if they sit down inside the metal ring like the adapter plug in the picture does, then strain won't be a problem. The price is certainly right. Although they are due to arrive in early April. Literally on the slow boat from China!

I am waiting for the correct one from minelab the thread on the oem one is the ultimate strain relief to protect the detector port from damage.

Similar to the ctx don't you think.

don't understand why people are buying different types of b/t headphones when (if you have the 800) it comes with the b/t anyhow
