Its the best I could with the Explorer.

Thank you for the depth test. As I said on the other forum this video brings clarity to detecting.

Best of luck,

Tony

I've owned the SE-PRO for ten years. Great video as always. The Nox is clearly the better machine. I'm about to buy the 800 myself. I've been watching to see how it unfolded. The adjustable recovery speed is what I really like. The SE is not a really fast machine. I dig iron laden colonial sites in Central Virginia. The Sunray X-5 has been a workhorse for me in the heavy stuff. The NOX with the 6 inch in the heavy iron is what I'm after. If Sunray made the X-5 for the Nox you would have about the best iron picker ever. Not sure if it will ever happen but a man can dream.

Calabash let me fix your Explorer Se Pro settings. Turn the sensitivity up to 27-28 ideally, never below 26 ever if you are tuning the machine for depth. 24 is far too low, that's not a depth test for an Se Pro. Also make sure its in MANUAL sensitivity mode not auto, auto is a horrible setting for a depth test. Gain at 7 is fine an my best all around setting, 8 is better on deep silver dimes. Gain below 7 is not a valid depth test on an Se Pro. Deep ON, Fast OFF. All metal will yield max depth 90% of the time, Explorers love a null, they are sticky and have a big footprint. Once an Explorer latches onto a null it doesn't like to let go of it. All metal gives improved target separation and unmasking, most of the time. On more rare occasions the reverse is true.

With that out of the way, imo the Equinox 800 is deeper than the Explorer Se Pro and I'm a GOD level Explorer Se Pro user. The only question is how much deeper in a given soil mineralization. In light mineralization the Equinox will beat the crap out of an Explore Se Pro on depth it will be embarrassing. In heavy mineralization the depth difference won't be as great but its significant.

I have some of the worst mineralization in the country out here on the west coast. That red clay back east is mild in comparison. Our magnetic volcanic black sand is really nasty, Explorer Se Pro's hate it. On some river swimming beaches is so bad even the Se Pro 8 inch coil will squeal like a stuck pig if you get the coil near the sand. Even X1 probes hate it. In this nasty soil mineralization so far the Equinox has proved to get the best depth, and is the most stable with still reasonable TID accuracy, super impressed with my Equinox 800 so far. Well except for the lame ass lower rod cam lock, it was utterly worthless out of the box new.

An excellent post about the right settings on the SE, for proper comparison, IMO.

Hi Charles! I always enjoyed your posts on the SE. How are you doing numbers wise with the Equinox? And in light mineralized soil what are you getting depth wise over the SE? Thanks! Ted

Between work and the plus 90 degree weather I have not gone out more than a few times this summer. The soil is baked dry as a bone and hard clay. When the rains return in a few weeks then we'll see what the Equinox can do.

Keep us posted Charles! If I would pull the trigger on the Equinox it would be the 600. I hope there would be an adapter out there as I just bought a new set of Sunray Gold Pros for my SE...

Sunray Gold Pros will NOT work on the Equinox. I love the Sunray Gold Pro's and like you I had a brand new pair in the box waiting for the Equinox but they don't work. My guess is the ohms of the speakers are wrong. I think (don't quote me) that the Equinox speakers are like 33 ohms, I'm guessing the Sunray's are 150 ohms. The result is the volume in the Sunray Gold Pro's when connected to an Equinox is very low and hard to hear.

Now that I dashed your hopes let me give you some, headphone speakers are cheap. I plan to order a set of speakers at the proper ohm rating and retrofit my other old pair of Sunray Gold Pro's. Stay tuned.

I don't even have to watch the video. The Explorer is the better target I.d. and depth. I have the Nox and had all the Explorers . most of the time people don't test the machines in similar settings . Also why test against the Explorer? The Nox is a medium level machine that is a successor to the Terra. Test it against the Garretts and similar price whites / machines.
But then Minelab is trying to sell it aren't they ! And any hype is good hype isn't it , till the next machine is released.

I don't work for minelab and don't get anything free from so have no need to hype anything! You should have watched the video because the statements you made are just not true in my soil...….Btw my deus with the 9 inch coil is as deep or deeper than both of the minelabs. BTW got the settings for the explorer from Tom in cal the guys who finds the gold coins out there. I would say they are accomplished with that detector.

First love your video's calabash. You can retest using the settings I gave you for the Explorer and it will do better, Ron's settings are much too conservative for your soil. The Equinox will still go deeper so it kind of doesn't matter. I live on the west coast now and have hunted both coasts. We have nasty soil on the west coast, its magnetic volcanic black sand, clay, and iron hence the lower sensitivity setting Ron recommended. Explorers hate west coast soil but should much better at higher sensitivity in your soil.

You shouldnt even respond to posts of that type. It doesnt matter HOW your testing and trials shake out, someone will always claim a bias, or improper settings, lack of skill, etc, etc. Just keep doing your thing, and showing honest tests. No detector is best in all locations and situations.
