Enjoying the SST more every trip out, And question about Threshold?

Old California

New member
Finally getting accustomed to the SST tones, In the beginning struggled with the iron and lowest tone but every trip out since appears I'm getting the two lowest tones down. Plus, Before I purchased the SST read somewhere it had six tones but didn't know for sure until this weekend when testing some recent targets pulled from various hunts. Yup! It has six tones and enclosed a pic of six various targets each sounding off one of the six tones, At first thought foil and nickel were the same tone and didn't know between nickel and zinc penny is another tone. Sure enough six tones not four

Enclosed are today's finds from a fresh water lake and couple of tot lots minus the square nail which I tossed in the pic to represent iron.

Have a question, Let's say the SST had a threshold while operating in disc mode would this enhance or take away performance? It's a silent search detector but as I raise the gain to max noticed a little threshold does bleed in, But let's say the SST had a threshold no matter what the Gain is would this enhance or take away performance?

Thanks for looking,
Paul (Ca)

I see you dug quite a few bottlecaps. Is there a way for the detector to warn you they were bottelcaps?

Hello CladDog,

When land hunting sometimes I can tell a screw cap much easier than a screw cap in the water, These bottle caps in the pic above are from a fresh water lake. Usually VDI will bounce reading negative on up to high conductive this is an indicator it's a bottle cap, But sometimes VDI stays locked on the signal fooling me. However, Out in fresh water I usually dig these signals because the mineralization effects the signal so we can't really trust both VDI & audio it may be a good signal.

Same with my AT Gold, Will get fooled with scree caps and in mineralized water get fooled even more.

I'm tempted to mod the SST adding on an adjustable Threshold feature and maybe more, Nice unit light as a feather and does well on land.

Take care,
Paul

Hello El,

Not sure of the Type of material the four tone find in the pic but other finds in the older pull tab area fall in the four tone window, Silver dime falls in the sixth tone slot.

Liking the SST more and more, Got some neat things going on soon with the SST.

See you soon,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Glad you are liking the SST, I am really liking mine more and more as well.

I Tried it out in gold country and in a old hydraulic mine where the slate bedrock was hot and rusty looking. The G2 was having a hard time with the hot rocks but hunting, I was double checking the G2 with the SST.
I balanced the SST the way I did in the video and it silenced all the hot rocks I mean it was spooky quite. I found allot of small lead (No Nugs this time) and every one the SST picked up except one that was smaller than a half a match head at about a inch deep..

I don't know if this pit ever had detectable gold or if it was just fines there but with the targets we were pulling there is no doubt in my mind the SST would hold its own out there.

What the machine is doing when balance in salt and switch back I don't know but it raises the tone of low conductors and still gives a low tone grunt for Iron.

On the Six tones, In the manual it shows seven tones with six spaces between them. It shows a tone for -95 hot rock all its own. Check me out but when I hit -95 hot rocks I think it does sound a bit lower there it is also scratchy and low volume when it hits -95 hard to tell.

I just got to Echo so some beach hunting at Tahoe is in the near future but first the snow park and possibly a 40s ski run.

Be Well
Jim

Thanks Jim for sharing your recent experiences with the SST, Appreciate the information every bit helps as we continue to use the SST.

I like how you noticed when you did a GB on Black Sand mode and then switching back to lock position the low tone springs up to a higher tone, I'll need to try that very neat feature hopefully my unit can duplicate yours. My old Tekentics S/T does the same, In Black Sand mode all tones produce a signal high tone and in disc mode it produces all tones.

Going to change my SST up a bit next week, Replace the S-handle and with a new TDI Pistol grip handle. Then, Try and duplicate the MXT and M6 as much as I can with addition features and applying these on the SST. Apparently, Looks like the SST can accept at least one addition mod maybe a second and third (Threshold, Discrimination etc). I'll know for sure next week once I get her stripped down.

Here's a quick pic of the TDI handle, Will give it that MXT look again.

Thanks Jim,
Paul (Ca)

Thanks Jimmy I heard the seventh tone, you're right the SST has seven tones

Heard it today, almost like iron but lower and a crackly sound.

Loving the SST more each trip out, And a big Thanks to Jimmy Sierra, Greg and Whites Electronics for this fantastic detector.

Thanks again Jimmy,
Paul

Liked the chart for the different tones. Well done. Might make one for local items I find. Thank You.

Hey Paul,

Glad you hear it too, I wasn't sure if it was just a low volume hit or not some tones are hard for me to hear as I cant hear anything lower than 80 decibels in my left ear.

Thanks for verifying that!:clapping:

Had a couple not so bad hunts this weekend Ill try to get some picks up tomorrow of the good stuff. The SST is a silver magnet and it seems when you hit it you just know it with the cleanness of the signal.

I'm really getting foil and tabs down!!LOL
