English Penny from Aus.

Hi,

I found this Queen Victoria era Penny in an South Australian country town
This state was founded in 1836 so the coin of 1879 is fairly old in it's history.

Australia ( founded in 1788 ) began it's own mint around 1911.
Previous to that, it relied solely on England for it's coinage.

Hi Dave,

All Metal TID 32, 5-6" down in heavy soil.
It does depend on the year make of the penny though as some are a bit different TID wise.
It made my day.

Great stuff. Penny for your thoughts!!

Beale,

It's actually bronze, I believe.
Sorry the photo is a bit off colour.

Pre 1860 the English penny was copper
After 1860 it is known as bronze which is 95% copper, 4% tin & 1% zinc ... as far as I know.

ps. some silver pennies were minted also I think.
Hope this helps.
