Made this some what surprising discovery while detecting on one of our Australian beaches yesterday. Thought for a while I had found some very old and rare coin, it was very encrusted I could just make out "One Penny" but it was obviously a very different "One Penny" to the old Australian ones I know of. Anyway, cleaned it up a little today and could just make out 1985 as the date, bummer.
A little searching on the Internet soon told me that it is an English One Penny. Oh well, but there must be an interesting story as to how it got to my little beach.
But yesterday was certainly not disappointing, found my first gold ring which was very satisfying. It's a large mans wedding band, weighs in at 1/3 ounce (8 grams), I'm guessing it's about 18 carat but not sure as I can't see any markings on it. Can anyone tell me if there is a way of working out what carat a ring may be?
