End of summer season

Hello,

I went for a ride in low tide here in Italy. Very strong north-south currents along the coast probably exposed some deeper sand layers as I fond lots of Lira coins (out of circulation since year 2000), one nice ring and an earring.

Equip: Surfmaster PI Pro

Because I spent all summer on the east coast in Italy, far from home where I have my DSL internet connection. No way to follow the threads from there with continuity so I've been silent.
I really found a LOT this summer even if competition is heavily rising here and this season as been a "chess" like game in the water against all the other guys .
My Surfmaster PI Pro proved to be reliable and accurate. All the people I've seen here use Excaliburs and it looks like they leave a lot of gold behind. I have a couple of explanations for that:
1) They all use 8 inch coils and that gives me some advantage on depth on coin sized objects since the Sufmaster has a 9.5 inch head
2) They search too fast. A quiet, careful search is better than running around erraticly. The square meters you can cover for the same amount of time are the same if you run or if you do it step by step.

My Surmaster anyway has its own pitfalls: it is a noisy detector, you have to be really skilled at distiguishing between false signals and good ones and , as I always said, the head shape is not optimal for underwater use as it has a considerable drag and tends to flip up with strong underwater currents or waves. Overall it is a good detector and I suggest it for skilled people.

I include a picture of the rings I found in 90 days of search, no cheating. On the right crap rings, center gold rings, left silver rings, plus a picture of my equipment.

HAPPY HUNTING!
Cheers from Italy

Even with a coil stabilizer, when you've got surge or current, it wants to rip out of your hand. I'm sure it's a matter of time before the lower rod gets snapped.
I had to call White's and explained to their rep, how a spoked and/or center mounted coil would be the ticket, but I'm sure they're not going to bare the expense of retooling on my expertise :)
The PI Pro really is a bargin machine for the beach and water hunter. I've been very impressed with it's depth for a water machine in it's price range.
The amount of down time for repairs with Excaliburs, probably helped you increase you finds :sorry: The Excalibur cult are a strange lot.

Ah! A friend of mine has an Excalibur. It got broken two times during the season. The plastic elbow cup broke and the battery connector leaked...

The Excalibur has only one advantage in my experience: it has a discriminator and can be used in the only beach area that I can't handle because of iron excess and that is the swash area where ragets are almost all iron bolts ,wires, nails etc.
So I always avoid that beach zone. But do not reveal to Excaliburians that trash is only there and nowhere else! :)
Maybe the Excal can also better catch those elusive small gold chains due to the small 8 inch head but I've not proof of that.

Whites probably decided to save money on a head stamp and used the old terrain models head shells . I also had to replace the helbow cup screw with a inox nut and bolt because it gets losen and I lost the original one in the middle of of the sea.

Cheers
