EMI and the SE

I have been hunting a local park lately that apparently has quite a bit of the ole EMI. I wouldn't even have noticed it if it weren't for the interference when placing the SE on the ground when going to recover a target (coil is outward at a vertical position) and I'll get a full dose of interference. I had the SE set at AM in the smart mode, one notch out in the IM, manual sensitivity set at 28, Deep, Ferrous (tad bit of iron in the area), threshold set at just above silent. When the coil is to the ground the SE has a smooth continuous threshold when sweeping the coil at moderate paced intervals (pushing forward as to sneak up on targets with half swings to each side after one full swing). My questions are, am I losing any depth do to the EMI? Am I hindering my efforts hunting in this location? Should I reduce sensitivity even though I have a continuous and smooth threshold? Any comments would surely be appreciated. Thanks, Ricky D (MeNstick)

I usually try knocking down sensitivity to fight off interference. Sometimes I drop the gain and put it in a discrim screen to knock out the range of interference which is usually very low on the conductivity area. I have noticed that perimeter alarm systems and electronic dog fences are the usual culprits for me here. Since I love early morning detecting, the probability of these being on are very good unfortunately.

I think doing this is not so good for two reasons...depth is noticably lost and the false signals still sometimes crowd out good signals. Also, the coil becomes less 'hot' with the cone of detection shrinking. Sometimes there is no way to get rid of these falsies and it just gets too bloody annoying. I have a tendency to call it a day when this occurs or possibly move to another location if I have enough time.

I use the WOT coil on my Explorer II and it seems so bloody receptive to interference that sometimes I can barely put it above 18 sens without the falsing driving me nuts.

cheers...Keith

I seem to notice when I lay the detector down it happens during hotter weather more than cooler temps.as far as it being stable while sweeping but starts acting up when I lay it down. Power lines are always a source of interference and if you have them where you are detecting I would imagine that is part of the problem. Some like to push the sens up as far as possible then back down a little to stablize it while others back down on sens so as not to overload on near-surface targets and trash as much.
Personally, I am in the former as I like to push the sens up as high as I can then back it down. One note, a couple of numbers one way or the other should not affect depth too much. If your detector is stable while sweeping as opposed to laying it down while digging, I would think you are ok with your sens setting.
Just make sure you don't hear distortion while detecting, then you probably have it set too high. So all in all the call is yours.

Ricky I have the SE pro and had problems at first with it, and what was recommended to me was to try resetting your detector to the factory settings and then set your detector up again the way you like. I did this and it helped a lot but I also found that using a couple of bars in iron mask helps alot, like setting it at 28 or 29 in iron mask. This really smoothed it out. I dont know what factory resetting does to the detector but it worked for mine.

G'Day Briss, I know what you mean, When I drop, I stop, Usually Its my back , and then the wife gets the knife out, silly old bugger you should know better. This is really an addiction, Bob
