elite drawback

Went to a site and before I detected I did my usual test. Threw some coins down to see if the meter was set. A quarter was right on. Nickel right on. An indian head penny....no response. What is wrong? Checked my cable connections. OK. My disk was set to accept IH's. Why did it not see it on the surface? Had an idea. Put the penny a foot away and bingo. The IH was loud and clear. Set the elite for all metal and checked the spot I had first put the penny. There was a large iron object. The elite had missed it because the iron was large enough to null out the coin.

If anyone knows a way to get around this problem I would like to know.

What I have found when you are in area such as this the threshold maybe a solid null and not coming and going. What you have to do when this happens is go slower and listen plus the sensitivity may be to high. I can put a coin on top of my floor in the bar which is loaded with nails and other metal too and if I swing too fast I get no signal and just a null, but slow the sweep down and you will hear enough of a high tone do do a Sovereign wiggle and get a good ID. This is why I have said the threshold has to be coming and going on each swing of the coil or you are going too fast or the sensitivity is too high as it is seeing the iron and don't have time to see the coin. Now if it s really big iron I don't know of any detector that will see it, but nails and small piece of iron it will if the sensitivity is not too high and the coil is swept slow enough to see it. If the nail or iron is on top of the coin it may not see it from the test I have done.

Sorry for the late response. I was on vacation.
First of all, it may have been a very large piece of iron under the coin. I didn't check. As Macaco said that would cause a problem with the sov.

I had the sens on auto so it was not too high.

Rick, I am not sure what you are saying about(the threshold has to be coming and going on each swing of the coil) Please explain because.....
I don't use the threshold. I run silent because it does not have a steady tone. It is up, down, soft and loud and drives me crazy. I don't know if it my detector or all sov's but on my other detector the thresh is steady. I have read that to find deeper coins with the sov you need to use the thresh. Guess I would rather lose the coins under 6 inches rather than listen to that annoying thresh.

Can you tell me a little about the threshold? I should probably start another thread on this subject but I will see what happens here for now. How do you use the thresh on the sov?

What you are experiencing is normal the way it sounds with the threshold coming and going and changing tones. The Sovereign will null over any disc out target and also iron as it hate iron, but you will get a little response to some of it, but it wont be as repeatable as a good target. Sometimes it is one way signal or it will move and not repeat every swing of the coil. Now with the Sovereign it will change tone on every target it see and hold that tone until the next target, so this is why you hear it coming and going and changing tones as this is what we call the Sovereign language and once you learn it you will find this detector is very good at IDing targets and will see those real deep one.
Now with the Threshold you can tell many things with one telling you it has seen another target and sometimes it is very weak tone change and when you have experience you will be able to tell the tones you want to check out. Without the threshold you may go over many good target and not even notice it. Another reason for the Threshold is you can tell if there is a lot of iron as it will null on iron, so you now know you have to go a little slower so the Sovereign can see a good target in with the iron or else you will go right over a good target and not even know it as the threshold is just a null and don't have time to respond to the good target that may be between 2 nulls. When you hear one of these good target you have to try to make it repeat by going over just that area and trying to get the tone as high as you can and as solid as you can.
This is why I feel the threshold is very important and with it coming and going and nulling as it is telling you what it is seeing. I am sure many other too couldn't stand the threshold too when they first got the Sovereign, but once they used it they seen it was music to their ears as it tell you so much.
On sensitivity auto is a great place to start and learn the Sovereign as it makes the threshold smoother, but once you know the Sovereign you will see that manual sensitivity will give you more depth and more info on iffy signals.
One more thing is make sure you go slow and easy with the Sovereign as speed will kill depth. If you want try something run the threshold so you hear it coming and going and swing it over the ground and if you hear the threshold mostly nulling start going real slow and listen to how many tone changes there is, then speed it up a bit and see many will not give a signal. When I say slow just the slight movement of the coil is all it will take sometimes. It took me over a half hour to go around 1 tree as I was going so slow, but got 6 Wheaties a IH and a merc dime around that tree at 7-10 inches deep that I wasn't able to get a signal on if I was swinging like normal with the Sovereign.

Masking is prevalent in most metal detectors and using a threshold an experienced detectorist can pick out good targets next to bad ought to cover it and avoid confusion..Might use a smaller coil as it may help..
Always remember after cleaning out an old yard of silver decided to go for a gold ring and uncovered a gold plated one. After filling hole went over it again and got a clear high coin sound. About 8 inches down got a 1837 large cent. So if a smaller ring can mask just think what a larger object can do...
