Dug this item some time back out along the old RR line. Any ideas on what it was for ? It's 3 inches high. Kinda looks like the name tag they put on bicycles. Steve in so az

...an Elgin outboard motor. Or, a very large watch.
 
it was on a 1938 bike - guy posted a pic on all on another forum. Never thought of the outboard - good thinking ! Steve
 
But could be. Here's the one and only bike tag I have found. Research shows its fron late 1880's
