Eldorado question

Member
Got a great deal on an Eldorado and it came today. Had about 10 minutes to swing it in my relatively new test garden. My ground is tough. Thick, sticky red clay. I have a dime and quarter at 4'' and 6''. I couldn't get my F2 to hit any of the coins consistently. After a quick, sloppy ground balance the Eldorado hit all coins hard. Nice sharp round sounding "bzzzz" over the coins in discrim mode with sensitivity about 1/3 of the way. Nice.

I'm new to Tesoro, but I know the Eldorado had an "original" version and a newer uMax version. I can't tell which one mine is. It came in a really small box (that matters, right?) and the instruction book is copyright 2001. It just doesn't say uMax anywhere. Not on the machine or in the manual, at least that I can find. The machine looks just like others I have seen pictures of online. Brown control box, white 9x8 coil. Did they change the way they look from the old to the new? Detector looks just like the one in the lost treasure field test.

So how do you distinguish the old and new Eldorado?

Hay Wane,

It sounds like you have the uMax version. 2001 is the right year for it.

Here is a Eldorado uMax.

Glad you are getting along with your new friend. That's a very capable machine.

Not as deep as Vaquero but has better eyes and respectable Tesoro depth.

HH,

Thanks Tab, that's it. Except no white things on the switches.
I knew that it wouldn't have the depth of the HOTs, but by what I've read it would do good in the heavily mineralized ground in my parts. Not to mention it was in my budget!
I'm still surprised at how hard it hit those coins. I'm looking forward to spending some time in the field with it. I'm going to look into getting a smaller coil at some point.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd like to have one of those. Neat looking machine. Do they still make 'em?

it is a uMax model. one of their best I believe. Purchased mine new about five years ago and have been very happy with it.

Hay Wane,

The little white things are switch covers you can get in a radio shack. They are black though.
Don't remember where I got the white ones. They use them on wire towel racks and stuff to go
over the ends of the wires so they won't cut people.

I sold the Eldorado because I already had a Euro Sabre. The Euro is just like the Eldorado but
the Euro has an Iron ID feature. It seemed redundant. I decided to keep the Compadre, which I
got with the Eldorado, and Euro.

This is what I had before I sold the Eldorado. I only have three now..

The most important thing I can suggest (and you probably already know) is quality metal detector
headphones. Eldorado's speaker voice is a bit squawlky.

I'm not sure how to say this for your conditions, but, if you can keep the disc down it can talk
a little better. That can be next to impossible in harsher conditions, but it heightens sensitivity,
welds better depth and allows more expression from Eldorado. Sensitivity as per most
applications, I would use as high as I can stand it.

The 5.75" concentric coil is a nice addition to the Eldorado. I have a Silver Sabre uMax and they
swap coils, which is nice. I have 5.75", 7", 8", 9X8 and 12X10 all concentric.

I suggest you have lots of fun and have a very good year. It's hard for me to give tips when you may
know more than I. But I like the Eldorado. I like the V also, but when the conditions get bad I think
the Eldorado catches up with some of those depth mongers and shines.

Best of luck as this year unfolds.

Well you now know that you have the umax model. I've owned one for 4 or 5 years and really like it. I've had good results with the stock coil, the 10X12 and the 7" widescan. It handles tough ground well and is light enough to swing all day, not to mention breaks down into a compact package for packing to remote areas. I have multiple detectors and the Eldorado is definitely one of the best.

They were going for $300 on eBay.

That's what I paid, I think. But I saw two more go for

$300. They don't come along often.

They are very semilar to the Eldorado. The Eldorado
may be a better deal and it is easier to get.

Some like the Iron Blank as a target check and don't
use the Audio Feature.

The Audio Feature is kind of confusing. It may be best to
learn with the Audio off. And then see if it adds to the
pleasure of using the machine. It does add some instant
indication of low conductive targets up into foil.

HH,

Theres one on the forum forsale now

When I got mine it had the stock European 12X10 coil.

I new I was going to probably use a 5.75, and I already

had a 9X8 coil. So when I bought the 5.75, I already

had a 8" and 7". That gave a choice of 5 different coils

to use on my Euro and Silver. The 12X10 gave me the

option of going deep on relics and artifacts. And boy

does it ever go deeeep!!! On larger targets, like a lot

of relics and artifacts, it goes really deep with some

to spare. Not that big a difference on coins. Only about

1 1/2" or 2" extra on coins.

But that works well for me,

That big coil would have been what I would have really liked. Like you it would have added one more to the pile. Maybe I can find one later. I just drilled up my Golden Coils and sidewinder coil and the 9" to use 1/4" nylon bolts. Drilled up my Sov coils to 5/16" also. Just got to get my 12.5" for Sov GT done. My buddy down in Cape Coral has my 16.5" and 12.5 Excellerator coils testing them out. I think I will call him and ask him to drill out the 12.5". I am headed out the door to go hunting with my Golden so I will Post later on something I have been wanting to say about a few Detectors. Thanks for the replys. :D: :D: HH Jerry aka Tinfoil
