Eight Inch or Eight Inch ???????

grumpy

New member
Can anyone give me an idea if the Older stock 8 inch coil on the SOV is as stable or less stable than the newer Tornado 8 inch on the Sov GT?? Is the newer version quite a bit better????
Thanks
Grumpy

Grumpy the tornado coil is a little more sensitive and you will need to run your sens a little less but it still gets deep down. A real nice advantage is the weight savings and also that thinner profile makes it easier to swing in the water if you do any wading.
Id say they are both the same on stability as long as the sens is set correctly on them both.

Bling what is the advantage on the Sun Ray? Is it like the tornado in size or the old one.?
Thanks

Tornado is lighter and constructed to make the unit better ergonomically..As far as depth and stability differences are negligble...

Ive been running the 8 inch excelerator concentric on my GT for the past two years. I took my ten inch tornado off after testing it against the 8in and never went back to it. In my hunting areas the 8in was just as deep and more sensitive at all settings - from hot on the beach (10 oclock) to my normal 12 oclock in the woods and parks. But the real good part is target separation. Where my10 in will null and mask out on iron close to or on a good target , the concentric will just sniff it out and the tones are sharper to my ears. I've heard the same thing about the Sunray 8in. However, the 8in concentric has what many would consider a major drawback on the GT. It would not run at normal setting when hooked up with my 180 meter. .For whatever reason the threshold would not hold and the volume had to be reduced. Without the meter it runs fine.
I liked the coil so much that I just quit using my meter . It was a pain to unhook it for beach use anyway. My hunting style changed to accomodate no TID numbers to look at and think about. At the same time I picked up some valuable clues on identifying good targets by using all metal. tones.to double check disc tones. The concentric makes those AM/disc tones jump out for me. The end result is my trash rate went way down and my coin and ring rate went way up. I don't attribute that to the 8in coil or to a 5in coil ,or my 10 in or my new 14 in coil they all due the job in the right place, its listening for the right tones that works for me. HH

the Sun Ray's are much lighter.my S8 is just as deep as the stock 10"...the S12 is lighter than the stock 10".more coverage, and deeper.

I use the 8 inch coinsearch and really like it but I dont think it's waterproof. David at Dixie has some new ones.

Bling I think youve got the Minelab Tornado coil and earlier BBS coils mixed up. Theres barely a half ounce difference between the S12 Intruder and the 10" Tornado in weight and both are balanced very well. Same goes with the 8" Tornado and S8. Performance is about the same when comparing the two sizes and I have to disagree with you on the 10" to 8" depth comparison, Ive used them both alot on the beaches and the 10" is the deeper of the two. Minelab did a real good job when they improved on these coils.
