Eclipse 4x6 DD Shooter Coil Question

Gadget

New member
I just bought the shooter coil to compliment my 950 stock coil and since we're in a deep freeze here recently, I've only been able to air test the new equipment.

I'm only getting a VDI reading (and a fairly inaccurate one) at about 4" on coins during air tests (in relic mode & gain at my standard 7-8 ). I know the smaller footprint sacrifices some depth, but is 4" typical for this coil?

Gadget, I lose about an inch or so with the 4 x 6 compared to the 950.. I have never really air tested one so I can't tell you anything there... I will have to say that the mini-shooter is a super coil for going back into a site and "finishing it off." I'd say what your seeing though is normal testing in the air... Have fun and stay warm... Maybe a dumb question but do you have the ground auto track toggle set at "lock" and not "ground" during your air test? If you ask me I don't think air tests mean much anyway. Just my personal opinion.

1.. Turn the MXT Off.

2.. Put the toggle in the center 'Lock' position.

3.. Set the Discriminate level to the factory preset to just reject iron nails.

4.. Turn the MXT 'On' and increase the Sensitivity to the factory preset ... or higher.

Now, test a few coins to see the potential depth in 'air' or non-mineralized ground.

With smaller coils, on most detectors, you will be able to operate at a slightly higher gain than with a larger stock coil.

With a low gain (sensitivity) setting like you mentioned, and especially if the GB is tracking rather than 'locked,' you will not get very good air test performance.

I owned four (4) MXT's and worked with several others. I also owned three (3) of the 3x6+ 'Shooter' Eclipse coils and while they worked 'OK' I never really got very good depth of detection. What you're seeing, for the sensitivity you are using, is about right.

Thanks all for the help. I took your suggestions, played with it a little bit and learned a lot in the process. I have a couple of gold pickers that I found this year and I'm working on experimenting with that now.

Oh! And the lightbulb went on when you mentioned the TRAC switch. I guess that would make a big difference. No more mid-air tests for me anyway. I think putting the target on the basement floor would probably work better.
