As of July 30, 2008 the upper rod from the kit (purchased by itself as part number 802-5196-1 for $37.95) is already set up to accept the BHID control box, no drilling or adding clips necessary. With the stock lower fiber rod I found the length of the assembled parts quite short (I'm 5'10"), the Tall-man lower fiber rod was necessary for me. That part is more than 15" longer than the stock lower rod (stock is 17.75", Tall-man is 33").

That created another problem, the new lower rod was too long to fit into the carrying bag I put everything into to make sure I don't leave something behind. Since the new longer lower rod was MORE than long enough, I cut 7" off the end of it, drilled a hole for the spring clip, and now it fits into my bag while still having plenty of adjustment length to suit me. With the shaft weight I got from the same vendor in Freeport, Florida a while back I should have much less of a problem with keeping my coil on the bottom. (My machine is the BHID with the 9.5 coil that is buoyent, not the new Beach Hunter 300 with the 12" coil that isn't buoyent).

12`` coil does not fit in the carrying bag neither! So I have both problems now. Too long and too big coil. I cannot use the bag because of this. But I removed front right seat on my Lexus ES300 and now both MXT and PI PRO fit inside very nice! And two long big scoops.

I keep hacking away at the BHID trying to get it to do what I HOPED it would do when I bought it. I wanted a dual-purpose (water and dry sand) VLF detector with discrimination that would fit in a large gym bag, one that I could grab when I headed out on business trips. If White's had provided the original BHID with a non-floating coil I would have that when the machine was delivered. A lot of people say they never had a problem keeping the original 9" coil on the bottom while water detecting, but I don't believe it for a minute. I'd like to hear what they would say if the "upgrade" 12-inch coil, which is the same coil now on the Beach Hunter 300, wasn't neutral boyuent! I have no problem with adding a few bells and whistles to any detector I buy to improve it. But having to buy straight shafts and longer shafts, cutting shafts, drilling shafts and adding clips, shaft weights that have to be added for water and removed for dry land, and basically reengineering the entire setup just to get to where I should have been in the first place basically tells me that the original BHID was a piece of crap and White's knew it. Personally I regret buying the machine, and even more so now that they've added a GOOD coil and $200 to the price tag. I've spent half that trying to get the original to work. I'm finally down to the point where all I have to do is put the shaft weight on for water and take it off for dry sand, then carry the weight around with me, but I'll also carry a grudge against White's for not simply making the original BHID coil non-boyuent. That's all it would have taken to make it a good machine.

It does after cutting about 7" off. The lower shaft only needed to be about 6" longer than the stock one, so now it still has plenty of adjustment AND it fits in a fairly large (30"x15"x14") bag.

It could be worse. I could have spent $300 to upgrade the $800 (MSRP) BHID to the 12" coil, when now that exact machine is called the Beach Hunter 300 and is priced at $1,000 brand new. In light of this missing $100 piece of the puzzle you'd think White's would give current BHID owners a break.

I am also surprised why White`s sells PI PRO with standard LIGHT coil that is difficult to keep down in water. They know very well that this LIGHT coil is crap and not useable and still sell with it. I had to exchange my PI PRO with LIGHT coil for another machin with WEIGHTED coil that is beautiful. All owners of PI PRO with LIGHT coil sell them very soon. One with HEAVY coil is the keeper, finds gold going after dozens of hunters with Excaliburs. PI PRO with HEAVY coil is genious.
