Early Vermont RR tag

Hit this tag in a farmers field, thinking it was a cow tag I throw it in my pouch. Once home, I saw it was an early RR tag.

That's so cool! my parents live on a dirt road that used to be a railroad track here in NC, I hope I can find one of those.

Thanks, after reading the info, what is the difference from building a RR in 1845 and the politics of today ?
 
Cool tag, I found what looks to be a round trip, metal railroad ticket. I should post a pic, its pretty interesting as it list three different railroad lines and a seat number.
