Early morning hunt with the F 75...(long)

I hit a 40's to 80's era housing developement early this morning that all of the houses had been torn down in the mid 80's and all that remains now are the drive ways, some of the slabs and sidewalks. Since there have been a number of posts of late regarding vdi depth readings and vdi readings in general, I've been striving to pay closer attention to actual depth readings verses the true and actual depth of the targets being recovered and to what said targets are actually reading. I must state that I have not truly learned anything new as of yet, as I've not dug any silver deeper then 7". That particular recovery came last week and was a well worn 26 Merc. that the depth reading showed as 9-10" and the vdi read 73. This morning, I dug 2 more silvers, a 25 Merc. and a 44 Washington. Upon hitting the Merc. I got a 74 reading, a 66 and a 70. All readings, however, were distinct hits all within about a 5" area and not the so called bouncy readings. The depth readings of each were from 5-7". The first target I recovered was the 25 Merc. from a depth of 4-41/2". The next target was the 66 reading which was a little to the left of the dime and was a bottle cap from a 5" depth. The 70 reading was a little bit off to the right and was a wheatie at a depth of 6". A little bit later I got a 83 lock reading with the depth meter showing 6". That was the 44 Wash. and its actual depth was right at 5". All targets were recovered with the small coil and ground conditions were "dry as a bone". On my machine, the depth readings have been off and reading higher then the actual target depth, since day one. I learned that early on and don't see it as a problem, myself. I also know from the tone pretty close to what the actual depth is going to be. In trash, the F 75 excels! HH jim tn

being too close to the target when pulling the trigger.and "detuning" the detector a slightly, resulting in a reading thats less than accurate. (will always read deeper than the actual depth).
To truly get an accurate reading. you have to get that coil OFF the ground away from any potential target (that means the ground too guys) and then pull the trigger, and then move it over the target. you'll find those targets that have been reading deeper than they should....will now read a bit more accurately. They still probably wont be EXACTLY right..............but will all in all be much closer to actual depth. I honesty dont EVER check the target depth when detecting (never have).....as most machines I've used over the years have had decent depth perception (audio modulation), and you can call most targets by how they sound pretty darn close........................ Streak!

Hi Jim ,
Thanks for sharing your info, good post !! Where you in all metal ? and when you say the small coil you are referring to the white , 6 1/2 " by 3 1/2" white , elliptical shaped concentric coil , right ? I have one of the earlier 75's also , which I bought used from a dealer . I have not had the upgrades done and wont unless something goes wrong with the machine . So far I have not gotten anything deeper than 5" but I'm hunting in places that have been cherry picked for the deeper coins .I've been using the lowest discrimination and the stock coil . I've mostly been hunting in the shallower trash that has been left behind and doing quite well . I've also been doing well on jewelry at the tot lots . I will next be concentrating in the more open field ( where there isn't quite as much trash ) in all metal to see if I can nail any "deepies" that have been left behind .So far the only thing wrong with my machine is the coil is off to the side just enough to notice it and my battery box is a bit loose .As far as the depth gauge goes , I don't pay much attention to any depth gauge on any detector I have except my Explorer .Sure sorry for the people who have gotten the lemons !! The people I know of that have them have all pretty happy with theirs but that is no consolation to someone who paid big bucks and received a problem detector . I hope all problems will be resolved for all concerned .

Great finds. On my F 75 the depth readings are usually off.I've tried different approaches to the target and it still is off.I dig it any way.Bill

That's some good digging! I hardly if ever look at the depth reading, I can pretty much tell the depth by the sound of the pinpoint. If it sound deep, I'll dig a wider plug. The depth doesn't matter anyhow, if it sounds good, it's coming out. Ron

I noticed my depth reading odd too. But then I realized that a lot of times from the ground point down it was fairly accurate..If you take into consideration the Grass height then it was off. Weird huh...Maybe it reads from ground down LOL..and does not count the 2 -3" grass height.. But I still like the depth no matter what it reads of the coins I am getting..How do you spell Silver----DEEP.

I was hunting in de. I don't hunt a lot in AM. And, yes on the 61/2 x 31/2 elliptical coil. I, too, usually don't pay much attention to depth readings. I just started paying a little closer attention when it seemed there was some pretty good interest on vdi readings and depth, of late. Although it is nice to have the depth that the F 75 can attain, I am far more pleased with what it can do in trash. There are many, many more good targets hiding among the trash then there are that are deep. HH jim tn
