I hit a 40's to 80's era housing developement early this morning that all of the houses had been torn down in the mid 80's and all that remains now are the drive ways, some of the slabs and sidewalks. Since there have been a number of posts of late regarding vdi depth readings and vdi readings in general, I've been striving to pay closer attention to actual depth readings verses the true and actual depth of the targets being recovered and to what said targets are actually reading. I must state that I have not truly learned anything new as of yet, as I've not dug any silver deeper then 7". That particular recovery came last week and was a well worn 26 Merc. that the depth reading showed as 9-10" and the vdi read 73. This morning, I dug 2 more silvers, a 25 Merc. and a 44 Washington. Upon hitting the Merc. I got a 74 reading, a 66 and a 70. All readings, however, were distinct hits all within about a 5" area and not the so called bouncy readings. The depth readings of each were from 5-7". The first target I recovered was the 25 Merc. from a depth of 4-41/2". The next target was the 66 reading which was a little to the left of the dime and was a bottle cap from a 5" depth. The 70 reading was a little bit off to the right and was a wheatie at a depth of 6". A little bit later I got a 83 lock reading with the depth meter showing 6". That was the 44 Wash. and its actual depth was right at 5". All targets were recovered with the small coil and ground conditions were "dry as a bone". On my machine, the depth readings have been off and reading higher then the actual target depth, since day one. I learned that early on and don't see it as a problem, myself. I also know from the tone pretty close to what the actual depth is going to be. In trash, the F 75 excels! HH jim tn
