Early Coppers, Silver, Buttons and More

I haven't posted for a while so I thought I would put up some stuff I found recently with my 3030. The 1830 large cent, the Barber quarter and a couple of the Indians came out of a spot I worked hard over the summer, but it just goes to show, there is no such thing as hunted out. The nicer of the counterfeit British half pence came out of a spot I just started working. FYI, I've been collecting colonials for more than 25 years and it's that experience that helps me determine the counterfeit half pence. It's dated 1775, which is probably the most counterfeited date for coppers. The weight of the coin as well as the striking characteristics are a giveaway if you've seen enough of these. The shield on the reverse is the outlined Union Jack which says it comes from England. If it were a Machin's Mills piece the shield would have solid lines, not outlined. That might help you identify some of your own pieces.
I also pulled a couple of Indians out of the spot, a button with a rabbit on it and a very interesting metal plate. It is the state seal of New York with the word Excelsior on it. It's the size of a nice belt buckle and on the right side of the back it appears there may have been two solder marks.
The Merc dime and the buffalo nickels came out of a pocket dump with 6 Wheaties, everything dated 1938 or earlier. The were found about 50' from the other half pence which is barely identifiable. The rest is some misc stuff. The S.H Bishop & Co pate has a patent date on it of May 5, 1857, but I couldn't find any info on it. Anyone with any ideas?

Thanks for the link. At least I know what the badge might have come off of.

Very nice group of colonial and other finds. I don't know about you but I like the counterfeit coin as much as the real thing.

I'm with you Todd. Actually, I'd rather find a counterfeit British half pence any day than a legal (regal) one.

OUTSTANDING

I have not posted for months due to time and family but what you have is very impressive

The information about the "Fake" is interesting also

Great Hunt, Don! Very nice variety of finds!

Great finds!
Now I may be wrong, but that plate looks like it may be a C.W. era N.Y. militia plate ?
There's a great website dedicated to buying,selling,and I.D.'g C.W. relics called relicman.com
He even invites good photos of items that he will identify for free.
I'd contact that guy and see if he can tell you what you got.
Good Luck !
