Early 1800's Church finds

I got permission to hunt an old church originally founded in the mid 1840's . Unfortunately the Indian head pennies are badly corroded, but the silver is OK. Still got to clean them up a little.

Any suggestions on cleaning old Copper Pennies?

9 Indians - From what I can make out the earliest is 1864 and range to 1884, but as you can see they are in poor shape.
1 Flying Eagle 1857
1 Seated Quarter 1853
1 Seated Dime 1890
1 Barber Dime 1897

WoW, John. Superb finds. Thanks for the pictures.

Hi John, try some boiling hydrogen peroxide on the Indians. Put some in a cup and put it in the microwave until it starts to boil. Put the pennies in and let them sit until they stop bubbling. Repeat as needed. Be careful though, if their to badly corroded, hydrogen peroxide will eat them up. You may want to wait and see if anyone else has some ideas first before you try it. Where do you live in Maryland? I'm in Sterling Va.

Very nice finds - congrats ! :beers:

G4E has a method to clean copper coins that works for him and is worth viewing on his website

Congrats Again

Awesome finds!!!!!! I would strongly recommend against cleaning the silver with anything that may be abrasive. Cleaning in general is a serious no no.... However you may try what you please.

In the past on badly stained coins (much worse than what you have there) I have used toluene on a q-tip rolling it across the coin repeatedly to remove scummy old plastic tape and tar. Any sign of scuff marks or shiny highlights caused by cleaning will cause the coins to be graded as cleaned and will get them possibly rejected. I had 2 of mine get graded by NGC and they could not tell I cleaned them and I got a 63 and a 64 back from them. Just dont scrub them with anything. You can try lemon juice and q-tip. Awesome finds and I cant wait for my etrac to show up.

Very nice finds! I heat up 3% peroxide to a boil in the microwave, drop the coins in and let them set until the liqiud is cool enough to touch. Use a stiff tooth brush and dip it in the peroxide as you scrub. You may have to repeat a second time but if that don't clean them I just give it up.
