Sounds like you had a productive day! The thingie is a neckerchief slide. The neckerchief was worn on the back, hanging down from the collar and the ends were in front. They came together and the slide was slipped up the ends to secure them. Treasurefiend has found a bunch of these...

The slide is a boyscout neckerchief slide worn by the scouts before they obatin the rank of Eagle Scout. This version of the slide is the most current design, not sure on the exact date but I wore one like it up until 2001.

That design for the neckerchief slide has been around since at least the early 70's and maybe longer.
As far as I know, it's still being made today, so dating it will be tough.

I also found a neckerchief slide yesterday at an old school that is now closed, was very old and corroded. It has what looks to be a wolf head in the center, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that one for the cub scouts? Does anyone know the history of when the scouts started using them etc. Thanks and hh

The Boy Scouts of America were incorporated in 1910.
I've seen photos with U.S. Scouts wearing tied neckerchiefs dating to 1911
and wearing a slide as early as 1921. They may go back to the beginning of the program.

very interesting.boy scouts to me is as american as apple pie and baseball. im just sorry i dont know much about the program although my oldest was a girl scout for a little while.. now those are some yummy cookies.MMMM
