Eagle II SL. Any good? Recently inherited toy.

I have been using a very entry level Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. Fun, but I find mostly trash. A couple of coins in playgrounds.

Today, I just "inherited" a White's Eagle II SL. Very good condition, 55 pages of instruction manual.

Is this machine any good, or is it just another entry level machine that will waste my time?

The Eagle II sl is one of Whites finest detector ever made. It is right there with the XLT and other fine detectors from Whites. I had a 1989 model and sold it, after a year or so i miss it so bad i had to have another, now i have a 1990 that i will not ever let go. Just stay with the pre-set at first, then work your way from there. Even with per-set you will be better than alot of the new top money detectors. Good Luck Flintstone

I got this from my wife's grandfather. His health is failing and he is giving his old toys away to the grandchildren who are interested in his various old hobbies.

He tended to buy top-of-the-line when he purchased anything. I am glad that he did so with this as well.

I found the owner manual on this site, and don't know what the "pre-set" is, but will soon.

Thanks for your reply and guidance!

I have noticed that many White's users tend to be fonder of one year model or another.

Is there anything special about the years?

Mine is a 1991 model. Anything cool or special about that year?

1991 Eagle II SL is rated 7.5 out of 10. Good tannin, oaky, hints of apricot and watermelon. It's fully mature now, and should remain highly drinkable for many years.

Hmmm. I was hoping for at least an 8.5. Not fond of oaky and tannin, and that watermelon sounds a bit "iffy".:smoke:

With the 950 coil it's a very good coin machine, with the 8 in coil its a coin killer, absolutely pinpoints on the exact spot, very good separation, with a bit slower sweep. tone id is super, depth meter very accurate, at least that was my expierience. with tone id and expierience you can hear the difference between clad and silver.

It does well for coins, so far, but not so hot for gold rings. Not sure if it has be programmed in the past and misses rings, or what. Maybe the large coil?

I bought one used of course and found a Mercury head 1932 dime first time out! I cannot believe how easy the machine is to use and I find it easy to cary. I will never sell it!

scooper77515 , I have a Eagle II SL 90 Whites made the Eagle 4R 4 years 87/88/89/90 first 2 Blue the last 2 Black with the 1990 Whites did a up grade on it 1/2 thrugh the year
I think yours is a Eagle II SL 90.5 , Dos yours have Mixed mode???? on the ABC

You have one of the best machines Whites ever produced. if you don't believe me, look at our club face book page and see all my videos I made using my Eagle II SL 90. The face book page is https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Three-Seasons-Treasure-Hunters-LLC/157899550928280. If you have any questions on that machine, let me know. It will find gold and silver rings with no problem. Happy Hunting.

Bought a Eagle II SL 90 at a garage sale about 12 years ago for $75 dollars. Found it listed in a 1991 Eastern/Western Treasure mag. for $799.00 new. It was White's top of the line at the time. You can still get the 4.8v battery pack from White's if you call the factory # in Ore. The dist. dosen't have them. Cannot find the charger though, but mine still works. It's the new charger (trickle type w/auto trickle after full charge ) ,new battery pack is non memory NiCads. get um while they last, hang on to your charger. Kellyco still has the battery pack also, but no charger. company that made the charger for White's (E.D.S. Danville Va. is out of business). First of the White's microprocessor units. Good Luck Ralph

I have a model 90 for 91 (had an 89 model, sold it and got the 90, they put a signal balance knob on the front of this one) and I agree that they are some of the best machines that whites ever made. Target id is the best. As you said Ralph what is amazing about it is that you can tell a clad dime from a silver dime and a clad quarter from a silver quarter consistently. The target id is also accurate at depths. It can accurately id a dime at 8-10 inches, no kidding (probably depends on your ground, but in mine it is that accurate). I will never part with mine!. In addition to the blue max deep scan 950, I also have the optional coils (royal 800 precision scan & blue max 600 deep scan for it)!

I was wondering how hot is your ground with that kind of depth I.D.? Is the Eagle a 4 filter detector? Thanks.

My ground is low to medium mineralization. I D accuracy on this machine (on coins) is the best that I've seen on any machine even the newer Whites. Not sure about the number of filters, but I think it may be 4.

I am back, it has been a while.

The wife and I bought a travel trailer, and have been all over Texas with it. Thanksgiving week and this week (Christmas) we have been at the beach in Port Aransas. I put the Eagle in the trailer full time.

Now that I am at the beach, I want to know if this thing is waterproof, at least for the first couple 8" or so???

If not, I will use my cheapo Bounty Hunter. Might anyway, since I don't want this one rusting away over the next few years.

I had a 1989 Eagle 2 SL (3 preset pgms) and was totally amazed at the tone ID accuracy at depth (8 - 9 inches). I could consistently distinquish a clad dime from a silver dime for instance & It's a killer at cherry picking coins in parks. I sold the 1989 model and purchased a 1990 model (6 preset pgms) with the same great depth and target Id qualities as the 1989 model, however in my opinion I think the 1989 model is a tad deeper. With the SL layout the balance/weight at around 5 pounds makes it rather comfortable to swing!

I now own both a pristine 1989 & 1990 model and would not part with them!
