Eagle II for prospecting

I read Prospecting for Gold with the Eagle IIs and sl by Jimmy "Sierra". Has anybody tried it with this machine? I air tested a couple of small pieces of lead with my Eagle II and could only detect them about 3 inches away from the coil. Do you get better depth in the dirt?
