E-Trac tones?

I am interested in your thoughts on tones. About the only post on tones that I have found are 2 tones and multi. Not a lot of comments seen on single and 4 tones.

Myself I have never tried single tone, buy just before winter set in I was running 4 tones and was doing pretty good.

With multi tones I couldn't seem to get good lock on tone to a target.
When running 2 and 4 tones I was able to get a better lock on or what I call a repeating signal.

Just killing some time until the weather lets up a little.

Your thoughts please,

Yo Ron! THIS is why people love the CTX! By “people” I mean...ME! You can assign a tone to a RANGE of targets,and by doing that you get rid of the wavering signal that you talk about. Some people LOVE the “fluty wavering”. It doesn’t do ME any good because I’m looking for DEEP signals,and getting a “lock” or least a repeating signal is easier for me with one tone for that whole range in play. If you were to use 1 tone for everything on the etrac,you would have to use high discrimination,or look at your screen for everything. I totally agree...using Multi anymore is not my thing either. I did use 50 tone Multi on the CTX quite a bit before,but not now. I just need to know I have a deep,repeatable target with numbers that are at least somewhat close to what I need.
 
I like multi tones, variability set to 29 or 30.
You can play with your pitch setting while sweeping dime, and adjust some to get the sound you like the best.
 
Well the CTX is a little rich for my blood, so I got to work with the E-Trac until my ship comes in. LOL

I went back to the manual last night and went through all the auto section. I pretty much come to the conclusion that when using discrimination use less tones. So I just turned my E-Trac into a beep and dig machine.

Now if I was running a open screen the tones would be the only way to have any discrimination.

What do you think, am I barking up the wrong tree?

I’m not saying you should run and buy a CTX,no need. You’re on the right track for what YOU want to hear. If you set your disc so that whatever falls in that range/those ranges would get you to investigate ANYWAY,then 1 or 4 tones should suit you fine. And it may very well make the signal more solid,as it doesn’t have to try to “figure out” what tone to assign it(as much). I don’t think you’re barking up the wrong tree,you’re barking up YOUR tree.

IDXMonster, what you said I marked in red is what I was thinking when I changed from multi to 4 and 2 tones. I think I may have used the term lock on but I like the way you said it better.

It's a shame we got 9" of new snow on the ground and it is 16 degrees and I can't try some of these ideas out.

Multi conductive is my heaven when iron is low. Nothing like the minelab “whistle”!!

Couldn't agree more. The tones were one of the major reasons I bought the E-Trac. Love multi.

About how heavy is your CTX?

Online search says the CTX comes in at 5.2 pounds and the E-trac at 3.9 pounds. So there is over a pound difference. Ouch! Can't wait to get my Equinox @ 2.96 pounds. :clapping:
So the Equinox will be over 2 pounds lighter than the CTX. and one pound lighter than the E-trac. My Deus weighs 2 pounds.
 
Tony,I never cared about weight. I care about results. That’s me. Weight isn’t a factor with me.
