Hey Mike,
I hunt all winter long here in Michigan as long as I can dig that is. My last silver find completed silver found in ever month in 2017.
If you can find an area that is covered in leaves they make a great insulator and prevents the ground from freezing. I am thinking about checking out a local park tomorrow with any luck I will have some finds.

Yes,the coil can be submerged. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT tip your machine so that the coil is higher than the control box,as water can run down the shaft and right into the main housing. You WILL have problems if that happens,so be VERY careful and mindful of this until it has had a chance to dry out COMPLETELY.
I think the coil is waterproof to 3m but as the machine cant swim that doesn't matter . I have used my ET pro coil on my Explorer 11 in around 2 plus feet of salt water and it works.
On YT there is a bloke that made his Explorer completely waterproof so the coil must be able to go to 3m.
