E-Trac and Hot Rocks .. Help !!

Jimbuck

New member
I was out today for couple of hours. I guess I am somewhat pleased with the unit but it will take a few more out tings to get the hang of this. I found 4 buttons. Not bad for this area but I had a few problems. The biggest issue was that I could not get the hot rocks from reading/. I need to get this issue taken care of ,.. Any Ideas.. Thanks

Jimbuck. High there!

Before other forum readers can be of any help, you MUST be more specific about the so called 'Hot rocks' you've encountered.

Firstly, have you kept a sample?

Secondly, where is the data of the E-trac's digital read-out of a typical specimen?.

Without that kind of input, a meaningful reply is limited.

This request for data is applicable to ALL non-specific queries that often are posted.

So folk, please help us to better help you. ( Whenever that is possible.) .......MattR.UK.

My EX II was a pain using in my area since hot rocks were always a problem in areas. I have been using the ETRAC in the same spots and there is no effect from the rocks, it's as though they do not exist.

Jeff ...and Marie...........You echo my suspicions on this one, that's why I asked for some digital data.

In metal detecting, nothing is 'written in stone' regarding the infinite variability of targets, so I personally try not to be too dogmatic regarding such matters.

That said, I, like you, have to date found no problems with 'rocks' causing any responses on my E-Trac.

One point I would like to make, is that the term 'hot rock' is poorly defined and often used inappropriately.

If there are 'hot rocks' then I also claim that there are 'cold rocks'.

So forum readers, let's hear your understanding of what rock characteristics make them hot or cold?

MattR.UK.

The rocks "alone" seldom, but have, given me a pretty good signal on the E-Trac but usually they seem to just help "amplify" the signal of another target next to them. If I'm getting a reasonable signal and spot a piece of magnetite, I kick it off to the side and check the target again. Sometimes the signal is still good but many times it is weaker or even gone completely. I have found that this happens pretty much only on "rocky / trashy" sites --- Duh --- So I think it is the combining or warping of the magnetite signal with iron signals that is the problem.
