DX-1 probe for MXT

arizonaames

New member
I just got and tried out the DX-1 probe with my MXT. The plus side, it was great for pinpointing but on the negative side, it was making the MXT too heavy to swing for any length of time. I finally had to take the probe off and put it in the pocket of my vest. This helped a lot and still gave me the option of using the probe. Has anyone else come up with a way to hang the probe from your belt or vest?

Where did you mount the probe on your detector? I like mine is on the shaft but my hunting pardner has his mounted to the detector housing. He claims his detector is balanced better than putting it on the shaft.. What ever works. I have not seen anyone put one in their pocket but if it works for you keep doing it. HH Dennis in Idaho

Mine is on my housing it's great it doesn't seem to be to bad,but I never tried it on the shaft so whatever you think.

I have it on the shaft but unless you have arms of steel, sesions will be short. The MXT is already a heavy unit and with the added weight, it will shorten swinging time. Whites should make the MXT with a removable box so one can mount it on one's hip or chest. I used to do that with my VSAT and made for longer swinging times in the desert.....jim

I have mine mounted on the shaft, and I really don't see any difference in weight or balance................... You can take the box off and use it like that BUT you have to build your own hip mount, one guy I hunt with has done that. He made one out off a old back pack and he carries it on his hip........

I've got mine on the shaft and the only time it comes off is when we're involved in a seeded hunt. Other than that, I've not noticed the weight. What ever works is the way to go! HH to all, Nancy

Bob, I used to use a fanny pack for my Goldmaster VSAT box and one could swing in the desert all day without getting arm sore. How would one go about unwelding the MXT box from the shaft? Can one order just the upper shaft from White's for the MXT and then just cut off the excess shaft around the box? White's should have made an option for this since this was common in the past and even their spokesperson, Larry Sallee, a fellow nugget shooter, did this as well.....jim

Yes that's what he did, he still has the display screen attached to the box.
I don't really care for it. I tried using it and found it a bit bulky

I have the mxt with the DX-1 probe mounted to the shaft and do not notice the added weight very much. In fact where it is mounted the MXT seems to be well balanced. I just got home from swinging the MXT with the 15X12 SEF coil for 3 hours. The coil is quite heavy but again it Balances well and I don't use my Swingy Thingy unless I am going to swing this big coil all day. I will be 76 years old on 14 April and have pretty bad Arthritis but take medicine for it and I can keep my coil to the soil with little pain. I have my detector shaft adjusted so the the arm cup absorbs much of the weight. Good luck on solving your detector weight problems.

Titan Man just mentioned the Swingy Thing. Have you considered using one of them? That may solve all your weight problems. HH Dennis in Idaho

I just made a swingy thingy out of a pair of suspenders and a bungee cord. It sure works good for long stretches of MDing. It will work well in the desert....jim

Were are you hunting at in the desert { what part of Arizona }

Somewhere north of Rye Patch reservoir and east of Lovelock NV. I also like east of Minden NV and north of Reno. The MXT is worlds above better than my old VSAT.....I just had to find a way to lighten the weight of it. I thing this homemade swingy thing will do the trick.....jim

I agree with you, I find the MXT a better machine then the GMT. I like hunting around the Bumble Bee area just north of Phoenix.......

Bob,

There is a bunch of fine gold in the Crk about 1/2 mile south of the old town and mine. Calichi soil on the Drk bed and the gold is on top of it.......jim

Hey Jim, thanks for the info, I will check it out the next time I am out that way. Which might be soon the Wife is wanting to go to San Diego, That's all I have been hearing lately, but I need a good gold fix I got the itch bad........
