Dumb stunt = fried GTI-2500

Well-known member
I had to go out of town Monday and put my two detectors in the shower due to the number of burglaries in our area. Thought nobody would see them in there with the door closed and a towel over the door. Usually I put the 2500 in the corner and the At/Pro in front of it.
I did it backwards because I was in a hurry and for some reason the shower head leaked water with the valves turned all the way off on to the console of the 2500. When I went to retrieve the two detectors and saw the water on the console, I tried to wipe it off and saw that it was inside the unit. At this time, I obviously had a senior moment and decided to turn it on and see if it was okay. Wrong move! It started screaming like a demon in purgatory and would only stop when I removed one of the battery packs. Shorted out the circuit board. When I turned it upside down quite a bit of water dripped out of the console and I believe if I had left well enough along and drained it, everything might have worked out okay. Putting power to electronics covered with water was beyond dumb, but it's my fault.
Lord knows I try to live right, but sometimes I'm just not too bright. Live and learn, die and forget it all. I don't need a time machine, just a time out to think things through. Glad I got the At/Pro just in case I get to go detecting this week. It was too hot to put them in the car and leave them while we waited to see the doctor. It hit 96 that day.

That's terrible Fongu:rage: Maybe the folks at :garrett: can get you sorted? Here's to the Pro finding a large gold goodie to help with repairs or replacement:cheers:

Bummer! As if a fellow doesnt have enough to worry about, hiding ones valuables in the shower for Petes sake!...you know, maybe putting it in the hot car with the window cracked might dry it out?...I dont know, what have you got to lose at this juncture? A friend of mine dropped his non-waterproof minelab in the Lake last year, power on, he took it home and put it over the heater for the night...all good, worked for him....anyway, you are so good with the Pro, I sure hope theres a mega Gold/Plat find in your future to get you square with the World, or maybe even a few points up!.
You do live right, so its not that, just one of those things..stay in it my Man!:clapping:
Mud

We all make some crazy moves during our life. Some hurt ...Some don't.

Maybe.....just maybe, all it needs is a good drying out. After all, it was fresh water. I once drove over one of my detectors after leaning it against the car after a hunt.

(please don't tell anyone )

Best thing to do if you get water, especially salt water, into any electronic device is to FIRST remove the batteries, rinse with bottled or tap water then get some distilled water and rinse the device thoroughly with it. Let the device dry completely, this may take a day or two depending on humidity. Placing the device in-front of a fan will help. When you are feeling comfortable that it has dried out, re-install the batteries and turn it on.

You MUST use distilled water for the final rinse. Ocean, lake, stream, tap and bottled drinking water have minerals and other contaminants that can adversely affect electronics when left on circuit boards to dry. But if the device was wet with salt water, it would be best to use any non-salt water ASAP. Then go for the distilled water. The salt water is a great conductor compared to the distilled water which approaches insulator status.

Believe it or not I was involved with a program in the U.S. Navy that washed and rinsed electronics. We used a special "soap" then rinsed with distilled water to remove 20 years of dirt from multi-million dollar pieces of electronic equipment...we did not have one failure.

I think I will wait until next Monday and try it before I contact Garrett for a return authorization. I went to the library today and did our church prayer list and while I was there I typed two permission letters for two places I've wanted to detect for some time now. Hope to mail the letters tomorrow. Two other sites I'm interested in I haven't been able to find the owners. One of these sites used to be a lake owned by one prominent family and used for banquets and recreation and parties, but it's been subdivided and sold into lots and I may have to write everyone of the owners of these lots to cover this lake. Another site I've wanted to detect for years is an elementary school I went to in the late 1950's and early 60's and I never could find the owner's address, but wrote them a letter today as well. Plan to leave the river along for now and hoped my car would be out of the shop to hit these two isolated spots that I don't want to drive my Mama's car to, but when I called for an update after nearly 3 weeks, they hadn't even touched it. Service manager and his staff took offense to my statement he didn't call his customers and let it sat all this time and used the excuse they didn't know to work on it and the lady I talked to was the one who took the order from me in the first place. Small town politics, I guess. Now that they put me in my place, they started on the car today, but it will probably be two more weeks. I hope I can get out with my At/Pro and find something worthwhile to pay all these bills. Finding more sites thru my research than I expect to ever detect what with my disability and Mama's health, but I hope by writing enough letters to people I will have enough sites to really work when I can and find something worth posting. I have a lot of items on my first list or wish list to find and have a feeling I'm going to find something really special this year. HH. Thanks for your comments and helpful suggestions. It's good to have your support. That's what I like about these forums. Lots of experienced members who have been there and done that one way or another and lots of good advice.

I put the batteries in today and it set up quite a racket. Used the reset button about 4 times and it seems to be okay except when I scan a target, instead of getting two beeps or sounds when the concentric coil goes back and forth over a coin, I get 2-3 or 3-4. Think I will take it out tomorrow and see what it can do. Praying the good Lord blesses me not to have to send it in for repair. HH.

Possible moisture still inside? try the white rice trick, who knows, may help that out and help the detector get a better read. again, only a hope. lol.
