Dumb Question?

I am mostly a jewlery hunter. I like hunting for the smaller bits like earrings and such. I am assuming the AT Gold will be better at this than the AT Pro.

Can anyone with experience in this area tell me if I am assuming correctly?

Hi CD, I run the gold and it picks up pretty good on the small targets, I do get a lot of earrings, some buckshot, 22 casings and often up to 10 inches down. Problem last year was to big a holes in the scoop, so this year my home made scoop has smaller holes and now don't have to re-find the drop outs lol. I never used a pro so not sure how they compare. Mine is great in the trashy areas tho.

Frankly, I haven't found gold yet with my ATP. I think it may be like nickles, they rang in different than other coins(unlike my ACE 350) and I passed them over. As soon as I figured it out I re hunted areas and got the nickles. I do find a lot of silver, 7 rings, and 4 coins.

My ATP does pick up on very small pieces of metal, so small the Garrett Pin Pointer doesn't, and the scoop can't hold them.

Hi CD,

The ATG will absolutely find small targets like earring backings and bird-shot ... especially with the stock coil. Both ATP and ATG will pick up small bits of metal but if your going after tiny jewelry ... then I recommend going with the gold.

I hit small stuff all the time with the ATPro stock coil...even running it 40 disc...little foil, good, half tabs and such, split shots of course, then one day this strange occurance...finding all of these tiny silver beads from a busted bracelet scattered about in the sand, had to gently use my hand to uncover them...sort of wanted to see if it could be done... dime is there for reference. I doubt much little stuff gets past either unit regarding small jewelry in totlots or fields or the beach, they say the Gold is better for nugget shooting, has a bit more adjustments than the Pro I think, and obviously has no trouble at all finding tiny shiny..., but for inland jewelry type items, the Pro should be fine I would think...Like everyone mentioned, the drawback on the sand/water is the scoops! A .22 shell or split shot will drive you crazy...

Thanks for all the replies so far. It looks like the AT Pro does a fine job in its own right.

Is the 5x8 coil on the AT Pro every bit as sensitive as the stock coil?

With what you are wanting to search for, no. It's more sensitive when configured correctly for site conditions.

Both will bring home the goods, but unless you plan on doing some prospecting, save a little dough and go with the AT Pro. Also, if you plan on hunting in salt water, the AT Gold will not work for you there.

I use the At/Pro and it finds small stuff all the time. I use it 95% of the time in the water and my GTI-2500 on land except in real trashy areas. Most of my hunting is in the water and I can't believe how many 22 casings and shells and sinkers I find and try to scoop up and they continually fall out of my scoop. Since I built my sifter, I lift the scoop even tho it's heavier with the sand and mussel shells and dump it in the sifter and get most of the 22 casings and sinkers that used to drive me crazy. I intend to put some 1/4 inch hardware cloth in my scoop so I can sift the sand out and just use the sifter when my scoop is full of rocks, gravel and all those freshwater mussels.
I actually do much better with the 8.5 X 11 inch coil than the 5 X 8 and that's just the opposite of others on this forum. Whatever works for you is best. HH.

The one thing I am trying to figure is whether or not the AT sniper coil is concentric or DD. Does anyone know for sure?

Hey fongu, I thought it was just a Northern California thing, (too much wine) to do opposite of others on this forum. I see you are having great success in your neck of the country. I agree, whatever works fo me is the best. The AT Pro sure is fun, isn't it? Congrats on all those river finds. Best success. HH. Au is #1, especially the O's.
