Dug this copper sheet metal piece in a school yard yesterday.

Much thinner than a coin, a hair bigger than a penny. Gave a smooth weakish signal. Dug a plug, went down 2 more inches to 6 inches, removed dirt with hand. Checked the hole with detector, target is deeper yet. Went down another inch , removed dirt with hand, checked hole with detector, still deeper than 7 inches. Dug another inch deeper, removed dirt with hand and finally got it at 8 inches, measured. Then I dropped a zinc penny flat in the hole and covered it. Couldn't detect it in Disc. or All Metal mode, not even a whisper. The halo effect adds detection depth it seems. Soil was mild, damp, soft, no stones, short grass. Cortes, 9 x 8 coil.

Now wait, lemme get this straight. You got a clear, repeatable signal on that little copper bit and dug it at 8"? With the Cortez?

Someones telling stories then. All the "experts" talk of how the Cortez doesn't go deep. You hear similar commentary about the Golden:
"If its not a Vaquero or Tejon, you have no chance of finding deep items..." Aint that what the guru's say?

Just kidding. The Tesoro GP/Coin detectors will fool you. They're not as raw as the others, but I've yet to feel let down when they are used properly.
Thanks for the details and the revealing insight.

Yep. I search in All Metal mode, ground balanced, then check in Disc. mode. Signal was repeatable weakish, but more than a whisper in All Metal. Meter showed Iron bar only, no ID number, no depth. My first time at this school. My detecting partner found IH pennies, and a two cent piece there (all not deep), plus 8 gold rings, and a local detecting club searched there some years ago. I passed up quite a few weakish signals there yesterday, decided to dig this one. Jabbo P.S. I have a Vaquero too and I find they have the same detection depth, based on limited tests. But I use the Cortes exclusively because I like having a meter to glance at.

That's a lotta work for a little scrap, Jabbo!
Less chance one will get away from you...

I've been diggin more canslaw and foil, myself.
Finally got my first Au ring for this year, so it does pay off.
