Dug my first Confederate Button today !!!

Went out to an old house place on a friends land where I have dug numerous flat buttons and Union Eagle Buttons.
Then today I dug my first Confederate button it's a script "I" button is about all I know about it.
It measures 22.6mm and appears to have an iron back. The shank is missing but I'll take it. Guess it was worth
the 21 ticks I pulled off me when I got home. If anyone knows details about this button let me know. It would be appreciated.

Very nice, John! Congrats on your first Confederate button! Man, that's a feeling you won't ever forget! Best of luck on No. 2!!

Two lines of thought that I'm aware of concerning the tinback on a British face. The first is that these were re-worked by the Confederates to make a damaged button serviceable again. The second is that British firms began using tinbacks to prevent their being associated with the side that appeared to be losing ground late in the war.

Both opinions have merit, although I'm inclined to lean toward the former. I am speculating here, but the British were more than capable of using a blank brass back thereby leaving their name off. But then some have said perhaps the Brits were offering a lesser expensive product to a customer with shrinking pockets. Could be.

But of the war-time buttons created by the three principle button manufacturers (US, CS, England), only the CS produced and used tinbacks regularly.

But enough of that. Enjoy your great find! Congrats on it and I wish you the best on number 2!

I agree with Richard and that is a great find! I remember my first CS button and how thrilled I was. Congrats and may the second one be just around the corner!

Thanks, you guys are too kind. I'll admit I was pretty excited when I found the button though.
I kept thinking I know this is a confederate button but I wasn't sure exactly which one.
I know just enough about CW buttons to get me in trouble.

hi john, that's one heckuva button to call your first! man, i bet your ol' ticker was pumpin' good on that one! great job, i think like the other guys do - there might be another one around there somewhere. congrats, and hh,
