After too many days at work, computer problems and getting over a cold, I was due for a decent hunt. I did another hunt in the woods today, and the growth of trees was was quite dense where I hunted. So, I took my usual arsenal......250/sniper coil and the GTI1500/new 9.5 inch imaging coil.

First good target was a 1920 silver dime at about 6 inches, which read as a coin size with a good belltone in the coin icons. That got my ticker ticking. I stopped at the coin store on the way home, and he cleaned it and graded it as extra-fine. Probably worth about $5.00. That was the only old coin I got. The rest that I found were newer clad.

This find really got my adrenalin cooking. Could this be my dream find?......an old rifle?

Darn toot'n it was a dream find.....a real old shotgun sticking out of the ground! I carefully removed it from the ground and once out, I continued searching for the stock...but I couldn't find it. I got various signals in zero discrimination, pulled out a key, nails tinfoil but not the missing part I was really hoping would show up. Perhaps it just rusted away.... The barrel had rusted right through in some places. I carefully stabilized the rust with about 1 1/2 hours electrolysis, then a good vinegar bath and scrub, then finally a thick coat of clear lacquer. I was really surprised when I rinsed the final bath with hot water to find two spent cartridges still remaining in the barrel???? I plan on returning to this spot in about 5-6 weeks after the frost is out and grid the whole area, perhaps finding some more missing parts.

Finally.....the days take. I dug up some spent shells, a spent projectile, another toy gun and I just couldn't resist a nice clad hunt, just to get some of that free......cool cash. Another great day with a detector in my hands! :)

Thats pretty wild. Makes ya wonder what a guy would
be doing in the woods to lose a loaded double barrel
12 gauge...Looks like remington shells. "imperial"??
Also makes me wonder how long it had been there.
Looks like 30-40+ years maybe...? Just noticed another
thang...Them two shells had been fired. Note the round
hammer marks on the primer charge/firing pin area...
You never know....Could have been anything from a drunk
hunter that passed out and forgot his gun, to a mafia
hit, with a body buried nearby... :/ I don't know how
many mobsters they had in your neck of the woods tho...
I guess it's also possible the stock or something broke
off the gun while they were using it, and they just ditched
it.

Darn, Those are nice finds John. What condition was the wood stock in? That's really a relic and and half!!! With both guns, you should be read when the NWO shows up. (Ha Ha)

I thought that possibly the gun might have been stashed after a criminal act. Perhaps there is somw buries loot their too.:yikes:

Oh no....another sleepless nite thinking about buried stolen treasure.......

The hand gun is plastic.....one of those guns where we used to put beans in and really get the neighbors pissed with all those plants shooting up! The wooden stock from the shotgun? Still looking.

That's really cool John. Nice relic even though it is rusted like that. Can't believe only 5 bucks for the coin.

goodies to show us. Thats an excellent find.Does make your mind race as to why someone fired both barrels and dumped the gun by the tree as your picture shows.Whats even more interesting is that the shells are still in the chamber with the gun apart. From the picture is the barrel ruptured? If so that may be why it was discarded. Rupture with the final shots?
Very nice coin $5.00 seems low.
Go get em bud !

Bet there is an interesting story connected to this. Love to hear it. Is there anyone living close to where you found it that might know something about whoever owned it. Can you bring out any names or numbers on it for tracing its origin?

Bill

Back in the days when that gun was probably dumped smuggling booze ( especially from Canada to the U.S.) was big business with a lot of violence connected. Might be some real history connected to that old shotgun.

Bill

That's to bad. Got to be an interesting story tied to that old gun. I'm sure someone didn't just lean it against a tree and walk off and leave it, especially after they had just fired it. Have you thought about checking with the local gendarmes to see if there are any old unsolved murders committed with such a weapon or perhaps peruse the old newspaper archives at the local library.

Are there any local gunsmiths who could perhaps date and identify the gun for you? I hate unsolved mysteries. HAA. Hope you uncover something. Wonder what happened to the stock. It was probably made from a good grade of hardwood and should have lasted, in part anyway. Great find anyway.
