but like the last one is is corroded bad from being in the field for 100+ years.........dug this at a site of a one room school house, it was tore down in the 1950's, so this coin has had a lot of years of fertilizer on it. This 1870 looks to be better shape than the 1867 I found 2 weeks ago. Hope it cleans up decent like the other one did

Its a shame to see old coins come out in that condition, same in the uk too....... hope you'll be able to see more detail. good luck.

Real nice old coin. Hope it cleans up a little better for you. My oldest coin to date so fare 1900 V nickle. What coil are you using?

Cherish those coins.... history with a date. I'm still searching for some kind of coin other than the memorials I've found..(only 5 so far). Congratulations on another excellent find.

normally hunt with the stock coil, but this site was iron infested so I was using the 6" coil

That is a really great find. When I was doing this 30 years ago I had some advice on cleaning these coins with out causing any damage to them. I was told to soak them in olive oil. It takes a long time but it would remove most of the green corrosion from just about any copper coin. One of my best finds was an 1838 Half dollar in Very Fine condition. When I was young I lived about 150 yards from the Oregon Trail. Surprising that half dollar was my only really old find near where I lived.
