Ok the other indicator that this was a beaver tail was the large blob of red on the screen, but the sound was not very strong. A shallow nickel < 4 inches will scream nicely and give you a large red blob. If there was a speck or two of red and you were getting that weak nickel sound, then there might be a chance that it was a deep nickel.
 
I used to be able to tell if it was a beaver tail with my etrac about as soon as I opened the hole and heard the sound with the sunray probe.
 
If I was there I probably would have investigated the signal from a couple different angles..To see if there was any changes in how it presented itself, and then decided to dig or not to dig... I do understand that this video was a "can I call it correctly situation" , so you intended on digging it regardless. Your theory regarding the tones seems solid.
