Dug a few this morning before the storm hits !!!

Looks like today will be the last day digging for a while as we're expecting heavy rain for the next 4 or 5 days !!! Met up with Park Pirate this morning and he already had a silver war nickel in his pouch. In this little area of the park there isn't too much to dig except nickel signals. My first find also turned out to be a 1945-P war nickel which I followed up with a crusty no date Buffalo nickel a few minutes later. Then only dug a few wheaties until I heard a nice high tone amongst the trash. Dug down only about 4-5 inches and pulled out a 1946-S silver Roosie. With Park Pirate watching I then scanned the soil removed from the hole and was surprised to retrieve a second silver dime from the dirt. This one was a 1943 mercury. Also in the dirt was a crusty old crown cap that the coins must have been hiding underneath. Gotta love the way the explorer saw through that crown cap !!!! Was nice to snag a couple of silvers in what has been my worst year of detecting since I started in 1987. If not for that $2.50 gold coin I dug back in March, this would be a year I would like to forget !!!

Nice digs Ed . .

May I ask why you had such a rotten year with the exception of the gold coin ?

After pounding the same old parks for 20+ years, the finds are just tough to come by. I've only dug about 15 silver coins and I usually dig 50+ indian head cents a year but so far this year has only yielded 15. The weather was too hot during the Summer and now rain and a separated shoulder have limited my Fall hunting. Totals for everything including wheat cents are way down. Haven't done any cellar hole or field hunting so I have nothing older than 1863 this year. I guess I miss the good old days when every hunt would have me coming home with at least 5 or 6 old coins !! I am doing good on old nickels only because they are the only signals left out there !!! I need to find some new hunting spots for next year. I'll be retiring in the Spring so I'll have alot more time to detect in 2013...

Ed , I hear ya....I go in streaks .detect heavy for a few years , then slack off..Once I exhaust all my hotspots , it takes a new detector , or something special to get me back in the swing of things.. That being said , this year was one of my best years ever , Oldest coins , most silver , most Indians , but one thing I know is that next year doesn't look so promissing ..I have exhausted all of my producing spots heavily this year , and the coins just don't reproduce themselves...Time to hit the library up this winter ...

Not to shabby a hunt Ed...........silver is always good!........You mentioned needing new spots to hunt, I hope you find some. The storm coming in will be good for shoreline hunters....

Hey Ed,

Good to see you're out there swinging again my friend! Congrats on the good finds. I was thinking about you guys yesterday- I took a road trip to Seated Park yesterday, and believe it or not was a seated short of a dime slam- all from that small strip just outside the fence in left field- plus 3 Indians and a 13 Buffalo. I can't believe me, you ,Charles, Todd, Mike and others missed this stuff- doesn't seem possible. If I get a chance before we lose power, I'll try to get some pics up, otherwise after we get power back.

Regardless, good luck with the storm and hope you get out again soon. BTW, I didn't know you were retiring, but congrats on that! I've got 9 3/4 years to go!

Take care,

Jeff

Nice hunt Ed. Sites sure are drying up so I'm happy to find one keeper most of the time.
