I was peaked when I looked in the hole which was just shy of nine inches, very soft crushed dry red sand. On the high banks of the St Lawrence river nestled in the rocks, It toned in between 84 and 87, with disc2, 30 iron, at first I figured it was a penny, they always seem to be a solid 80-81. Sorry for no pic yet but my download cord is on strike, I'll be borrowing a camera to add a shot. It's really in great shape, lost it's colour but all the design is intact including the rim and all the stars too. Found a sweet little spot, also an 1890's canadian large cent, yes and lots of other clad too.

Any suggestions on how to get the pinkish color out of it?

Finally broke into the 1800's lol.

Hoping they'll work, enjoy.

84-87? That sounds quite high...I'd a thought a nickle would be in the 50's...that does sound like you are in some old dirt...wonder what else in in there? Very nice find! :clapping:

Thanks guys for the postings. Mud the rock there is high mineral, lots of iron, not sure if that would have anything to do with the tone, but yes I was surprised to see it was a nickel. Going back to the same place today for a few hours.:detecting:

Nice find, MD. I wouldn't try to change the patina of this coin. I ruined a V nickel from either 1911 or 1912 by soaking it in some worcestershire sauce overnight instead of a couple hours. It's pitted up like a teenager who forgot to take their acne medicine.

Ty all so much for your posts, I'm really liking it when I get home and show others that have the same interest what the finds of the day are.

Ty Fongu for your advise, I'm gonna take it and keep it with the old residue lol.

Cheers all and HH

Very nice find, Jon, and deep too! Not sure about the toning - maybe Hydrogen Peroxide??

Duh....lol! Nice find. That is interesting you had that high of a signal for a nickel. Is the GB high in that area??

Hi FP, yeah I was surprised by the high signal with it being a nickel. The GB is about 84 to 86 pretty constant in the park. As I md'd different areas I did find there is lots of bedrock not far under and lots exposed with high iron content, maybe thats another reason why such high tone, ty for posting.

Cheers and HH

Nice find! I actually found an 1889 V this weekend. I don't remember the VDI but it did ring up high.
