Ill start by saying last April 2011 i turned 62 and retired SSR well sort of i still work at the market i have been at 10 years but part time now because SS has a income limit until i turn 65 ok bla bla bla , this Spring i was ready to hunt lots of farm fields as the group i belong to has done the last 3 years ADT team 40 + members but due to a very warm Winter and incredable warm Spring now all the fields are plowed and seeded everywhere !!! gotta wait now till the Fall, anyway on my 63rd B-day this April i retied at my job April 28th coming TG i have been working jobs on the books since i was 16 long enough , my wife has to work 5 more years to do what i just did she is at the same market , it now looks like i will be at the beachs this year instead of fields here where i live is a Summer vacation resort with 28 ocean beaches and 36 bay and sound beaches 33 miles of being surounded by salt water on the east end of long island with over a 3000 acres of farm fields between that have been farmed since the mid 1640,s , here is my question ? just how easy or hard is it to learn the Excal II since i know the Sov GT now over 2 years , i want to get a Excal both my wife and me smoke but now we need to quit since i will be unemployed by choise we figured we could save 610.00 a month by stop smoking yes ..... a month !!!! out here cig,s are 10.00 a pack all you Excal experts chime in please on my question TYVM Jim :detecting:

$10 a pack! Wow, I'm a smoker but I pay about $4.97 for Maverick 100 Menthals. Just switched to menthals about a year ago for some odd reason and like them.

Congradulations on retirement and have fun on those beaches.

I've used a friend's Excal here and there and found what I've read others say...That the audio is somewhat different sounding on it versus the Sovereign. I'm sure that's mainly due to the differences in headphones. The Excal headphones for me have a more tinny or hollow sound to them. Don't care for them and would probably replace them if I bought an Excal.

Hi Critter that was 1 concern i had was the head phones looking at OBN ,s video,s i was expecting the same audio on my GT as the Excal but it,s not i use Black Widow i found out if i use the BW,s on my DFX it,s a whole new sound comparded to the standard phones White,s gives , i wont be going under water just a few feet at the most. , 4.97 ? this is NY everything is expensive . very slight learning curve going from gt to excal, you will pick it up in no time...now when you take the excal into the water there is another slight learning curve especially when hunting saltwater but when you get right down to it even the simplest machines have a learning curve... think of it this way ;learning the excal is gonna be a whole lot easier than qiutting smoking but i sincerly wish you good luck with both...

Man, life must be rough, all that time, all those beaches, and no fields to hunt.... bummer man, serious bummer...

But, I got an excal and a gt - and I use both of em, and learning one helps me with learning the other. The sounds are different, that is true, but not so different that I can't make heads-or-tails of something from one to the other. It might be slower learning both at the same time, and I will need to change the HP's on the excal because they are so tinny sounding, and that's not good for me. Getting into the water will be another learning curve, that's true, I'm sure, like bootyhoundpa described; but quitting smoking is a lot harder I think.

I would say get the Excal, keep the GT, use them both, and you won't be far off.

I'm not sure on this part of things, but I think PPing is a little different between the two - that is most likely due to the settings I use on the GT as opposed to the Excal though; and I'm not sure that it is different. It's just something I started to observe a couple days ago; I seem to be able to PP more easily with the Excal than the GT. Haven't the foggiest idea why just yet. We did have some storms rolling through for a few days, and tornado's - electrical storms that are on the way in, or out, even by a day, seems to make the GT chittery, but not the Excal. Again, I'm not sure that's true as I just started to observe that as a "maybe" pattern.

Take anything I say about either with a grain or two of salt - I've only had my a couple months now, and am still learning by leaps and bounds with each. But I think using either one helps with learning the other.

That is what i wanted to hear that the learning curve is not that diffacult between the 2 machines thanks all  like Tin Fin said i gots lots of time to learn it and plenty of beach..... ok so i aint goin to be a Crackbadger my head spins everytime i see what he pulls out of the sand over the years . :please: Jim

Accidentally tripped across it on youtube before I got into this sport couple of years ago...I think thats what did it for me! I smoke nonfilters at 5.26 a pack.
I believe I'll try to quit and save some money up for something I want. Like maybe a tobacco farm in Kentucky. Good luck with your summer!
