Ducks and utility trucks

Detector Man

Active member
Grandson and I went for a walk along the ditch bank....took the camera and found the ducks and a stuck utility truck....i dont know how theyll get the truck out of there.

The next day we went to visit my old army buddy in the country and the power pole with the holes is a food bank created by woodpeckers on my friends property....i dont know if they make new holes every year...my friends talks as if the woodpeckers FILL the old holes with acorns every year.....

I have dont know what kind of duck it is and the water is an irrigation ditch

I am not sure what the brown duck is, but both the brown and green ones are in Cali as well. Nice photos of the ducks though. That truck is gonna need to be towed out of there, or yanked. :) As for woodpeckers, they attack the outside eves of our house every spring, and they have dug some holes! :( And they do attack trees and such in more than one place. Wherever they think the worm is, they peck. HH and GL

Is the water in the irrigation ditch clear? Do folks fish in the irrigation ditch? Those are beautiful ducks, wonder if they live there year around. Thanks for posting these pictures and story, enjoyed viewing them. Kelley (Texas) :)

The water is clear...official discourage swimming due to the fact it is from the snow melt and its frigid even tho it has traveled downhill about 50 miles and the unsafe environment....once the irrigation season is over (winter) the ditch is empty...no water in it. Not uncommon to see shopping carts, tires etc in them. Kids do fish in there.
I sorta knew the colorful duck was the male...i had forgotten what kind they were...as far as do they live around here year around? i want to say yes but im not certain.
Thanks..

the guy standing next to the utility truck was the tow truck driver. When i first saw him walking towards the the truck i thought he may have been the truck's driver. As he walked passed us we talked and he said there was no way he was driving his 35K pound tow truck on that ditch. The width of the top of the ditch bank is elevated because every few years they remove the silt in the ditch and spread it on top of the existing ditch access road...so the side closest to the property owners fence and a nice drop off and thats why the truck is tilted some and of course it is soft dirt/sand.

Where we are im not aware of woodpeckers attacking the homes made of wood material on the outside....however, up north, my mother in law has property there near Redding,Ca and they do drill holes and can be quite a nuisance and cause damage to homes.

What crop is being watered from these irrigation ditches? Are these irrigation dictches near a city? Just curious where the shopping carts, tires come from. I think this is interesting. Kelley (Texas) :)

we have long established irrigation ditches (7 of them but I thought i was only 2-3) that criss cross the city and kids and adults use these ditches to dispose of various things...on occasion that includes stolen cars ....crops include orchards (oranges, plums, apricots etc) and vineyards and various vegetables as well
The city grew around these irrigation ditches and in many parts of the city they are covered or piped through .....the one by my house has a ponding basin right next to it and thats used to replenish the ground water for the city......irrigation ditches are used to water crops....drinking water is pumped out of the ground...we only get about 10 inches a year of rainwater....

wellllllllllllll, in fact there was talk of creating a lake ....kinda like the row boats in San Antonio (Riverwalk?) but that didnt work out for some reason...the ditches criss cross thru town and as far as building a dam...it would be just like proposing a dam in any other part of the country....too many man made hurdles so when the snow melts in the mountains it goes thru town and to the ocean..

Ah, I see Detector! I too live in Cali, and there are a lot of canals here. I didn't realize at first that you resided in Cali. HH and GL

Yup....we have the same oak trees you do leading to the Sierra Nevada Mountain..
