Hey guys - What do you think about using a DualField on land to search an early 1700's house, assuming it's not too trashy? I'm looking to achieve maximum depth. Would I go nuts?
Hi,
Be prepared to do a LOT of digging with your Dual Field.
I would use a VLF machine with a large coil, disc out iron and cream the crop for a first run.
Then go back, repeat with a smaller coil, less disc and higher recovery speed for the second run.
But everybody has their own technique.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply Skookum and I agree with you. Just curious what people would have to say. I'm still going to toss in the car when I go just in case : )
I also have an Etrac and an Ace 250. I think the trash situation will dictate whether I break out the DF and give it a shot. I bought it last summer to use on vacation so I have barely used it and am in no way experienced with it.
I've hunted in plenty of 1700's yards and the amount of ferrous junk can be staggering from all the years of use and occupation. I'd use one of your VLF detectors and maybe even start with the ACE, then over it again with the E-trac at a slower pace then finally maybe over the same areas with the PI if you must. You will maximize your hunt time pulling good targets FIRST with the VLF units. IF Non ferrous targets get scarce then pull out the larger obvious iron with the VLF then hit it with the PI listening for softer weaker repeatble hits, nothing shallow. I really think that is an ambitious approach but doesn't seem practical unless there is a lack of targets to begin with. You'll also pick up pipes and water shutoffs at depth. Good luck!

One last observation: If the yard of a colonial era house isn't trashy to some degree then it probably has had fill dirt brought in. I ALWAYS ask the home owner if there has been heavy landscaping.
Thanks for the suggestions YT. It's my friend's house so I am familiar with it and there hasn't much landscaping and no fill to worry about. It's about 6 houses away from the historic Keeler Tavern in Ridgefield, CT which was the site of several revelutionary battles involving Benedict Arnold. I'm hopeful I'll make some qualify finds. Your in a great location, I know some of the history there. I also know of some sites in the area that we hope to get permission to search this year. Good luck !
