Dual field coil...It floats...I don't want it to float...

Used the dual field for the first time yesterday while wading. It got to be a pain keeping the coil on the bottom when digging a target. It wasn't too bad to swing that way but let go for a second and it floats. I cannot believe White's put a floating coil on an UW detector.
Anybody know how much weight one has to add to make it slightly negative. I plan on putting some non-mineralized white sand inside a clear plastic tube, making a plug that will be water tight, and loop both ends to that plug forming a circle. I'll then us a plastic wire wrap to hold it to the smaller coil circle.
Any thoughts about that? Jim

Jim, I tell you , dive or snorkel. I was in Lake Washington yesterday with my Dual Field.
Dived one tank, gold ring, one wheatie, large brass bath house pin. Dive and/or snorkel
be the way.

I used a piece of 5/8 clear tubing (tygon) bought enough to make a circle the size of the outer ring on the coil filled it with beach sand and purchased a double ended male barbed fitting put the tubing together placed the barbed fitting in the ends and ty wrapped it to the coil seems to do the trick for me.
Good luck HH Butch........

I had a similar problem when I made a carbon fibre " Yorkshire long shaft " :ukflag: !!!! I over came the problem by removing the bung at the top of the shaft allowing the shaft to fill with water and get rid of the air that was helping it to float . I have heard of this problem with the D.F coz my mate has just bought one , but it may help you ?

I guess everyone has their opinions but I don't find it as an issue... maybe its just me but I like the way the coil is... I had a neutral buoyancy before I and prefer this new coil over it as its easier to swing.. I hold it down near the S and have no issues you mention ;)

Don't put the tube on the coil put it inside the lower rod. Cut a piece of clear plastic tubing that will fit snuggly inside the lower rod (5/16" ?). Take a hot glue gun and fill one end of the tube (about .25")to make a plug. After the glue dries fill it with sand. Plug the other end. Spray it with cooking oil or WD40 and slide it into the lower rod (make sure it goes all the way to the bottom and stops just below the button hole. Oh, by the way, you will need to remove the metal (or plastic) clip inside the lower rod and flip it around so that you get the extra 1.5" - 2.0" inside the lower rod. This will help get you more towards the "near neutral boyancy". I did this to mine and it works great. Let us know how it works out.

Keep Your Coil To The Soil

If you turn the coil around 180 degrees. This will do several things for you. First it shift the center of balance towards you which makes the SMDF feel lighter while hunting wet and dry sand. This change makes it easier to hold the coil under water and also easier to swing the coil in the water.

Appreciate all the suggestions. I don't see how I can use it without weight. When diving, there are times when I don't hang on to the coil and use both hands for digging or holding my position and the coil will head for the surface. It's kind of like having a helium ballon in your hand but needing it to stay on the floor. In this case, the baloon will float as far as the shortest cord is that will stop it's progress towards the surface. Jim

I was just going to say, that I don't live anywhere near you and even if I did I am such a hacker that you wouldn't need to sabotage my detector. I'm not a threat to any detector user. The loot will still be there after I leave. That was funny. Eddie in Pouslbo hunts some of the haunts I do and I told him get lost during his next outing. It's all in fun. No apology necessary. No offense taken, Jim

This is the reason I am trying to find a one handed small sand blower. I absolutely love my dual field, but it goes to the top like a cork! There is someone on one of the other forums working on a small blower
