I have not personally, but I know somebody who has. And I've tested mine in my backyard testbed where I have some deep coins buried and it works very well. What you need to keep in mind is that the Excal is simply a waterproof version of the Sovereign without a meter. So it WILL work fine, just like a Sovereign. But you won't have any meter to give you help on telling a zinc penny from a minnieball from a square pulltab. But if you were to learn the tones on these things well enough you wouldn't need it. So for relic hunting it would be fine and it's also pretty easy to tell a dime or a quarter with it, so I guess you could coin shoot with it pretty well too.

Hoi mike and everybody, do you mean the sovereign elite = excalibur ? Is there a difference between sovereign and elite or is it just souvereign elite?
thanks for answer Karel from Belgium...

Karel,

The Sovereign Elite is just one of the different model of the same detector. There was the original Sovereign, then the Sovereign XS, then the Sovereign XS2, than the Sovereign XS2a, the Sovereign Elite and now the Sovereign GT. These are all Sovereigns and as the year went on they did a few little changes and called a different version.
The Excalibur is still the basic waterproof Sovereign with out notch or a meter.

Thanks for all this info everybody. Very helpful as I just bought my first Excalibur and will be landlocked for a while before I can get to the water. But, is there a way to add a meter to the Excalibur? Thanks.

As Rick clarified, the Sovereign series machines are all basically alike, with the Elite and the GT having a few additions and enhancements that the other lack. But they're all BBS circuitry machines that share the same underlying technology and for the most part, performance.

As for adding a meter, there's ALWAYS a way. But a meter needs to have the coil wired plumbed through it and then out to the control box. Since the coil wire is hard-wired to the control housing (and waterproofed) with the Excal, there is not practical way to add a meter and if you did you would void any warranty and more than likely ruin the watertight integrity of the machine.

It would be a lot easier to pick up a used Sovereign with the meter than to put a meter on your Excalibur then you would not beable to get it wet. I have seen used Sovereigns XS or XS2 with a meter for around $300.

Thanks for the answer , its clear now...
I have the souv elite (great machine), now i'll go into 2-3feet water. I'll tray to do it whit the elite whit the box on my chest.
