I'm putting siding on my house and contending with the weather, lot of work but someone always has it worst.A neighbor of mine went for a ride on his Harley yesterday and came back to an empty house, his wife left, which probably didn't help motivate his next bike trip.Any way if you are out and about on a search drop us a post about the details. Thanks Ron

Well getting ready to sell our house and have been busy fixing little things. Now, it's been over 100 degrees everyday and the last thing I have to do is dig out an old stump. The stump is about 2' in diameter. I have been giving it the, "evil eye" for about 4 years but, it won't go away! So, I have to dig all around it then hit it with the chainsaw. It's gonna eat my cake in this heat! I need to go detecting!!!!!

John,I need to do some detecting also, thought I would try an alkaline pack loaded with cheap batteries and see what the run time would be.Those inexpensive batteries can be bought at the shack or freight place for next to nothing.Yea the weather report looks like the West US is getting hit with high temps. Thanks Ron

I'm going to school full-time after being laid off from a great job. It takes up most of my time, but it's good because I'm not one to sit on the couch. I only have about six months before I graduate. My Excal is down right now, but OldBeechnut is setting me up with the cure. On those nice days with a light East wind, I sometimes dream of being on the beach swinging my detector. I know that day will come again, it's the waiting part that gets to ya. HH

I am one of those OLD Retired types. Fortunately my wife of 49 years does not mind me being out swinging. Swinging a coil that Is.
Lately it seems that all I am finding is Clad, Clad and then some more Clad. At least I am getting to hear the GT sing. But not finding anything that justifies posting.

Last Monday I went to see the Audiologist at Fort Jackson SC to order new hearing aids. Being Retired Navy I can purchase hearing aids at actual Cost. Hugh difference between actual cost and what is being charged by Doctors ETC for hearing aids. I had recently had one repaired and then the second one quit. After discussing it with my wife we decided that since my aids were over six years old I should get new ones. Last Sunday evening I checked to see if the aid was still not working after spending a month in the hearing aid Dryer and lo and behold the danged thing worked. Got home after ordering new aids and it quit again. It did the same thing a couple of times last week. Now just waiting for the Army to get them purchased.

The thing that I found interesting is that I could NOT hear a nickel with only one hearing aid. The tone just did not stand out like it does when I have both hearing aids. Of course to me with my Profound hearing loss in the upper frequencies any change makes the tones sound different across the spectrum. I have to relearn every time I make a change. Even changing the volume on my headphones changes what I hear.

I am now using the SEF 10X12 coil and I find that I have trouble trying to determine how deep to dig. What once may have been the sound I got from a dime at four inches may now be the same thing I hear from a dime at six inches. I also like the more accurate pin pointing that I get from this coil.

I spent all Winter getting geared up for the hunt this Spring and early Summer new HP,s water proof box i built a few new coils for the GT and what happens my CHF congestive heart failure got worse i can try to walk a farm field or beach for only 15 or 20 minutes and my legs are killing me not much circulation going on then for days i can barely walk just pisses me off , i plan on getting it fixed again in July at the VA Hospital in Northport i need my Stints opened up again in my heart 3 of them it has to be done every 5 years or so and it,s time I figure by mid Summer ill be good as new again :detecting: sitting around in plain English sucks lol . HH Jim

Ron,

I'm using good old cheap alkaline from Costco. I've found a pack of them will last about 10 hours +-. Long enough for me, considering the price.

Suncoast get as much education as you can that's one investment that will payoff. In 1992 I was a full time student on leave from GM lol can still remember all the chemistry formulas posted on my walls for up coming test. We'll all get out soon and make some nice finds the searches are much better when priorities are in order.HH Ron

George,my hearing isn't the best either, serviced fighter aircraft wing tip to wing tip for miles in line on the flight line at Kirtland. This was 1974-1978 I bet one of those A4's pilots were George Bush who require a quick turn around.HH Ron

Jim,get that operation as soon as possible,I agree 100 percent that sucks, but you know what needs to be done to get your stamina back.Take Care Ron

John 10 hours is pretty good considering the cost of those batteries. Thanks for the information.Ron

I seem to have the worst luck too as a few years ago I was all ready to detect and on my way to a site and tripped on the sidewalk at the bank and put my 2 fingers all the way back to my hand, but didn't break them, but split them wide open and had to have the stitched back up and couldn't detect and got infection in them. I was out of detecting for 6 weeks. Then in 2006 just when detecting was good I got chest pains and had to have 3 stints put in, so it took my out of detecting for a while. Then in 2011 I had 2 heart attacks, so they found the stints closed off and had to do open heart surgery and had to have a triple bypass which was in the first part of October when it was cool enough to detect. This year while getting my detector ready to go I forgot I had my chain saw next to my bench and tripped over it and landed on my left shoulder hard and messed up my rotocuff so I am in therapy right now, the left arm is what I use for swinging my detector, so my GT with a new 10X12 coil hasn't been used yet this year, but sure hope to soon.
Even after my triple bypass I have no energy and tired all the time, so I sure hope the DR can find out what is wrong with this almost 66 year old body so I can go out and do some serious swinging with the detector.

Rick,I do notice the extra weight of the SEF coil, another problem deeper targets seem shallow with the 10X12 coil.My brother had thyroid problems and had it removed, his symptoms he was tired all the time even after a long nights sleep. They have a simple blood test to determine this condition. After the operation and medications to adjust for the missing thyroid my brother says his energy level is remarkable. My next week checkup the Dr. wants me to take that blood test also.Maybe this year things will improve.HH Ron

Ron this Friday ill be going in for a Ultrasound test ill tell them to check my thyroid also who knows ? 3 key factors for me is good diet , no smoking !!! , lose some weight .About that SEF 12x10 i used to have one on my DFX and i always found very deep targets that sounded shallow like BB sized copper bird shot it,s a amazing coil . Jim

Rick you might want to ask your doctor if they have ever checked your thyroid function. I am type II diabetic due to having been obese. I have taken care of the obesity by losing 119 pounds. Due to the diabetes I see my family doctor once a quarter to make sure that everything is functioning as it should. During a visit a few years ago my MD asked me why we had run a thyroid check on me. I replied that all I did was sit down and let the young lady draw blood. He asked me if I had been having any of the symptoms of low thyroid production and asked if I had been Cold or tired all the time. I replied that lately I thought that I was going to freeze to death and that all I wanted to do was sit in my easy chair. Put me on Synthroid and cured both problems. Now with the weight loss my wife says that I must be related to the Energizer Bunny as I am constantly doing something. I haven't felt this great in many years.

Last Summer, June 2012 I got sick, doctors had no clue. then finally my daughter found a doctor who recognized what I had and started my treatment. Lyme's........Took me 4 months to get back on my feet and I'm still building back what I lost. Slowly my energy level is building, done my first 7 hour hunt a few weeks ago....Life is Good.

WTG Joe, i'm fighting back problems and it's not good and at my age it's worst, Glad you found it, and a quick recovery. HH

Get a pair of Oldbeechnut's headphones and you'll hear them, i'm almost deaf and with them Skullies i hear great and without my hearing aids in, because i wear them in both ear's too and they are programable ones, so i would talk to Joe and see if you can get a pair, HH

So I'm not the only one!!!!
I am never happier than when I put on my truss, install my wife in the car in a warm spot where she can watch and head off detecting my favourite spots.
As soon as I put on the phones and adjust for a sweet low mellow threshold, I am in another world.
No doctors, medications or stress. I can do 2 to 3 hours before reality knocks. I may be a bit sore tomorrow, but what the heck, I have my ham station for those days.
Detecting has helped me through a dark phase.
Go for it, and the exercise can only help.
