Down to the last few Seconds!

I had 3-hour's to hunt after work before sundown. Finding the Old coins where I'm hunting always
seems to start around the 3-hour mark...Well today was no exception! I managed the old Crusty
Indian Head Penny first at almost 8" down, I was using the pro coil today! All the easy targets are
almost all gone and I was trying everything to help get something good before the sun went down.
It seems at this point the Indians and Lady Liberty are hanging around that no good Iron dude! Man
I tried TTF with and open screen but it was costing me time that I didn't have going back and forth between TTF
and MCT to check for the hight tone. Next I tried Multi Conductive, discriminating 31 on down but that was costing
me time as well, as I had to really slow down in the iron or risk the chance of missing a Silver. I had about 30 minutes of
light left so I thought I would try something new. I left the Etrac in Multi Tone Conductive and Open
up the screen and listen for the high tone and visually check each one and left the Harsh loud Iron
tones in the ground and kept going......The sun was almost down when I got a Nice but somewhat
broken high tone in the midst of close iron.. I managed to get the target pinpointed down and did the
Wiggle and the display was bouncing around but had some good numbers and the depth was Below
the 8" mark... I dug a deep plug to save some time and was down there past the 8" mark directly.
I turned on the X-1 to check out the hole, Nothing! Then started to check the dirt...Guess what! Nothing!
I was getting a little anxious as the sun was almost gone and nothing..I turned off the X-1 got the pro coil over the
Dirt pile and nothing!...Back over the hole and "Bingo" Hight tone! Turns out the target was laying on top of the
ground beside the hole in a little clod of dirt...I broke the dirt off and saw the backside of a silver dime...I thought
Barber! Turned it around and brushed a little dirt off and I was just able to see Lady Liberty in a seated position.
Talk about the "Last Minute" More like the last few seconds and the sun was gone! Made My day!..Here's the
Kicker! Got home and cleaned it up to check out the date...Guess what! the same date as the seated dime I dug a few days
back, but better condition...:detecting:

Congrats! My only two seated dimes are 1891 as well...lol. Always fun to find them...just wish they were found more often!

Great finds and story! Sounds like you are hunting very smart with your machine, I'll take a lesson from what you've explained for sure. Congrats!

A fantastic looking Seated - congrats !

Nice last minute find Duggr!
Hopefully I can get seated this year. Last year I didn't get any but the year before I got 7.
I miss seeing them.

Very nice looking seated! I'm like you, it seems the better finds come at the longer hunting point. Either that or I find one right off and not find any older stuff for quite a while. Thanks for the pictures.

Sounds just like my Hunts...Thanks!

Nice going on your second Seated this year and to think that I was at that same place 6 or 7 years ago an didn't wonder over to the area where you are finding all those nice old coins. All I found there was Merc's, rosies and wheat's, but I'm damn glad that you found the right area, WTG Doug.

Thanks Mark...This is my 3rd seated this year!

Hey duggr, you've been on a roll lately! Nice seat'd!

That story of yours sounds real familiar too! :super:

The remaining oldies in the parks around here are stubborn to say the least being they just refuse to see the light of day.

Thanks ironsight..
I going to Pound that area until I have to dig Iron to recover anything...Then I will put the 15" WOT on
and Pound it again...Might take awhile to cover the 500' X 1000' area though

Thats not a bad plan of attack especially if your gut 'knows' there's gotta be more oldies down there!

I did something similar in an area i initially found Barber Quraters, a Barber Half and multiple Barber dimes.
After finding those easier ones it seemed to all stop with only deep corroded nails to show. So i grid swept the area with my small Sharp Shooter coil (an iron magnet), to get most of the iron dug out.
Then went in with the heavy artillery. It worked, recovered a few more oldies but it did require a lot and i mean a lot of elbow grease.

IMO, the oldies if they exist are where the deep corroded nails are at. Nails from long gone carnival booths, concession stands, out houses, bleachers, tents, etc.
These iron infested areas are basically a frustrating nogo for the majority of weekend detectorists with their $50 RadioShack detectors.
Just got to be willing to dig is all. Easier said than done.

Elbow Grease! Yah I figured that, theres a place where i'm hunting that even the smaller 8" coil is to big...
Will Break out the X 5 the next time I go and check it out..I'm going to clean the easy targets out first....I'm Lazy

excellant...makes up for the smoothie in a big way!!!!!
