Double Silver Half Hunt: A First And A Worst

Sooper Dave

Well-known member
I was able to get out for a couple of hours Sunday afternoon to do some dirt fishing. I went to an old school spot that looked good on the old maps. The little old school is still standing and makes a cool backdrop as I think of the kids out playing around it trying to have some fun when not having to hit the books. The place is super trashy and the ground is very dry. I went slow and listened for any sign of a good signal. It started out slow with just digging bottle tops and deep cans. Seems that all of the grounds were used as a trash dump at some point. I started to dig a few wheat pennies around the side of the old school and then got a nice tight high tone that turned out to be a nice sterling ring. So I was hopeful of there being some silver left to be found. A few feet away from the ring I got another good high tone and was surprised to see the Eagle of a silver Kennedy half down in the hole. I've dug a few clad Kennedy's but this is my first silver. I slowly looked around that spot and pulled a few more wheaties and worked my way up the hill behind the school and it was just as trashy but managed to find a small Army cuff button and a Merc. It was getting time to go and I worked my way back to my truck. I spent a little more time in the front and picked out a nice high tone there and was expecting another lid off of some type of bottle when I flipped out one big ugly round disk the size of a half dollar. Sure enough after some cleaning I could see Lady Liberty walking in the sunset. This poor half is the worst one I've dug but excited to add it to the collection and glad you can at least tell what it is. It was nice to get out a dig a few keepers and think about the kids that was there to have dropped them a while back. HH David

Great Hunt Dave!! That Walker may have seen better days... but a Walker none the less!! Very nice!!

Thanks! Yeah always a thrill to dig a Walker, just a shame to see such a pretty coin destroyed like that.

2 silver halves in one hunt in regular turf is extremely rare you know...I'd be back there the very second I had the chance!
Hell of a hunt Dave, congrats on the fabulous finds!

That's one excellent hunt - $1.00 face value of silver in one hunt is hard to come by, and with two Halves is even more rare!

Wow, two halves in one hunt. Pretty amazing and that location is incredible. Hard not to travel back in time while hunting around a structure like that. HH

Hey Dave,

Very very nice hunt way to go!

Really nice days hunt.

Congrats,

Congrats on another great hunt Dave - two Half's in one day ... wow !

From here it looks like the Walking Half was either in a fire or under driveway stone where is was run over by cars countless times ?

Thanks man! I lucked up one other time and dug a Walker and a Franklin within a few feet of each other. And earlier this year my buddy and I both got a Walker on the same hunt. It doesn't happen often around here for sure.

Thanks! It's a big day to dig two.

Really nice finds! I wonder what on earth could have caused that to happen to that Walker half?

Thanks Tony! It had to be in a fire. I imagine some one was burning some trash and the Walker happened to be in it.

Very cool getting double half dollars. That is not easy to do.

Thanks FPD I know it's hard enough to come up with one half these days. Pretty lucky to get two from the same place.

Thanks Mark I pretty sure the Walker was in a fire. It's so pitted and thin. I'm just glad you can tell that it is a Walker.
