Sweet find man! I haven't been lucky enough to find any old buttons yet.....might be some deep old coins in this corn field just waiting to be reunited with this old button. Congrats!
Sorry, I'm no button expert either, but that one looks like it's got some good age. It's a very nice first find! It looks to be a flat button dating back to at least the (mid to early?)19th century, some went back even further. Hopefully, someone knowledgeable will answer, otherwise, there are a number of sites that may help you, like http://pw1.netcom.com/~jimyce/bm.html for example. I couldn't make out the word below the 'double gilt' - if it's a mfg. name, you're in business - just Google on it and 'double gilt' and / or flat button. Otherwise, they get lumped into the category 'flat buttons'.
Nice find. Those turn up often here but most all of them I find don't have a nice design like yours. Got two treble gilt last week that were toast from fertilizer.
