I was out with my new lil 250 and at an old playground and only found 5 pennys and alot of trash. I cleaned them up and found this penny. It has the lincoln memorial across lincolns face. Has anyone heard of a coin like this?? Is it real or what and does anyone know how much it might be worth? Here is a pic of it. I am having trouble getting my digital camera to take it close up. I will try to include 2 pics. Take it easy on me I am new to the forum and detecting.LOL
Thanks

Sorry for the double post everyone!!!
I will try to post another pic in a little bit.
Thanks

Pictures are not to clear but it looks to me that it is probably a die clash. If you can see the building on the front that is what it is, it happens when there is not a coin and the 2 dies clash together. Very Nice find for the error collector especially with the definition on that one. Like I said its hard to tell your pictures are not clear.

but it can't be a die clash, it would have to be perfectly centered (memorial)in order for that to have been the case.
What does the obverse look like? Is there an off-centered bit of Lincoln's bust over the top of the centered memorial? That would indicate a double strike where the coin flipped before being struck
for a second time.
Very unusual to say the least, if "real" (defect caused inside the mint by some means), by definition it has value.

If it was in uncirculated condition you might get $30 for it. This type of mint error usually occurs when a penny gets stuck in the die and then another coin blank gets stamped with the previous penny still stuck in the die. The design from the back of the older penny gets stamped across the front of the new one.
Here is an ebay auction for a similar penny.

Do you have a scanner? Any coin that is mistruck at the mint and is an oddity is generally worth quite a few bucks. I'd have it checked out. Look at the price on the double die 55 cent ( $1,140 in XF condition and $34,000 in MS-65 condition ), the three legged Buffalo nickel, and many others. What's the date on this coin? You might have a real valuable coin here.

Ebay is hardly a conclusive test for coin values. These people paid $30,000 for a cheese sandwich, $65,000 for a cane with a ghost allegedly attached, and the last time I looked, over $20,000 for a snowball. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Yeah that's what I thought it was, a flipped mistrike.
