Double Check Those Fake Rings

Retired Digger

New member
I learned a lesson this year. Found a ring at the start of a hunt during the Summer and was positive it was a fake. The gold looked kind of dark in color and who would put a birthstone in a gold ring? I checked the inside of the ring and there were no markings, so into the pouch it went. I gave it a quick cleaning when I arrived home and put it in a box where I keep all my fake jewelery finds. A few months later I got it out again for a second look and thought it felt pretty heavy for a fake ring. If I remember correctly it rang up at about 70 on the AT Pro. The two other gold rings I found this year were in the 58-60 range, but were smaller. What could it hurt to take it to be tested. Long story short, not only was it gold, it was 21K !! The dealer told me that it was a custom made ring and that it was not unusual for a custom ring not to be marked. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse and I walked away a little richer and wiser. Well, maybe not much wiser, I am trying to upload the picture and it is too large. I will try to follow up with the picture as soon as I figure out how to do it properly.

On a ring with a stone a good indication is if the stone has posts at the corners to hold the stone in place. If it's just glued in place, it'a a cheapie. If it has posts chances are that it is a good one. an amature gemnologist gave me that tip.

I use Photobucket.com to upload all my pics...It is a great place to backup your pics, and it automagically resizes them so they fit on Forums and in email, etc.

HH,

Here is a picture of the 21K ring that I found this past summer. I gave it a quick cleaning to take this picture so it does not show the ring at it's best. As I said earlier I have sold the ring so I can't provide a better picture. It was my best jewelery and most valuable find of the year, but the one I prize most is the 1922 silver dollar found in the same park.

Everyone have a great New Year !!
