Don't use the E-trac if it is really cold out

Steve from Ohio

New member
I was out with the E-trac this morning for a few hours and it was cold....like about 22 degrees F.

At first the E-trac worked great....but after about an hour, the screen started to act real slow and it would start to lock up.

According to the manual, the operating range is 32 degrees to 122 degrees F and I guess they really mean it.

So now if it gets cold out, You have only two options. Either not go out or go to some place warm. Florida here I come.

You might try a cheap solution if you have the environmental dust cover. Some of the chemical hand or toe warmer packets might fit in the rear between the cover and back of the unit. Whether this will work is a 50/50, but easy enough to find out.

Here is a thought. Turn the backlight on. Maybe that will keep things warm enough so the LCD will not freeze up. Worth a try for the desperate. Not too good on battery longevity though.

I strap a hand warmer to the unit (wrapped in cloth) and put another one behind the screen cover, and it works great. Can't let a little cold stop me. It was 15 out at 6 AM and around 20 ish when I started detecting and it worked fine. But go unprotected and you are asking for trouble!

Wow. I was just out with my brand new never used e-trac yesterday here in MI. It was about 20 degrees and I was outsite about one hr. I did have the environment cover on but I never had a problem at all.

Try it for about 3 hours. The screen will freeze up and the E-trac will just stop working.

I really do not recommend using it when it is that cold. The manual says the temp usage is 32 to 112 degrees.

Mine has a double cursor when it gets cold!!! I'd like to see a tech explain that one:shrug: It's kind of distracting watching two cursors move around. It disappears when it warms up. That's why I usually wrap it with a hand warmer and it works good.

John B of Edmonton hunts with heat packs on his Garrett units all the time. He mostly does this with the Ace, but has used it on other detectors as well. So long as the electronics and battery pack are kept warm then the detector should work fine. You just have to keep the detectorist from getting frost bite.:poke:

P.S. We have to worry about heat stress at the moment. I got too keen a few weeks back and paid the price. Found $118 though.:stretcher:

Mick. When my detector gets hot the screen goes black and it is well before 122 deg for sure. It happens on my Explorer as well it is typical of LCD screens. My mates Explorer does the same as well. seeya Neilo
