This is a flat looking handle of some kind, is has "hsb & co" stamped on it. I have looked at hsb & co and they made all kinds of hardware etc. but I can't find this one. I think it is made out of cast iron and is about 3 1/2" long. I thought it might be a razor handle but I don't know, any ideas? thanks.

I spent 15-20 minutes looking for something that resembled the (I'm guessing) handle you found, no luck. Below is just some related reading, I know sometimes (for me) it's interesting to learn a little about something you've found.

Manufacturer: HSB & Company Site of Operations: Chicago, IL
Founder: William G. Hibbard Website: n/a
Parent Company Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co Notable Lines/Models: Our Very Best (OVB)
Tricycles Made Since: 1855 (founded)
Still in Business: No

COMPANY HISTORY:

William G. Hibbard started out as a hardware salesman. In 1855 he started his own company, merging with his former employer, Brown & Tuttle Hardware. Hibbard's business grew rapidly and soon he had his own company. Spencer and Bartlett later joined him, thus the HSB & Company. HSB manufactured and sold all sorts of hardware including tricycles. The "Our Very Best" line was one of their house brands and a leading seller. HSB & Co. was sold to Cotter & Co. in 1962.

BusDigger,
Thanks for the links, I am going to keep looking as well. That is one of the fun parts about detecting, trying to learn about the finds. Thanks Randy

My first impression is a handle off of an old butter knife.

Ditto....a look at the business end should reveal if there was a knife, fork, or spoon attached to it. You'd have to think there would be a flat slot in it where it extended from the handle.
